I *think* the wizard of 1GRFE 4.0L HP Tuner tuning @JustDSM is NA.

I dont think he needed dyno pulls to verify that his custom tunes are improving VE. Plenty of guys using his tune can attest to this.

But if you're looking for before/after dyno pulls that might show a HP gain somewhere in the powerband of a 4.0L Tacoma with your exact mods....then you're the perfect NA candidate for the dyno.

thanks for the response. this looks like a nice product but really surprised no dyno for basic na bolt-ons.

not looking to be the first guinea pig. really surprised that hp tuners do not have a dyno of any sorts. looks like they support a lot of vehicles and toyota is listed as other…

maybe we can get a 1/4 mile track video with justdms vs stock…. something? can the scanner / data logger calculate hp from a street pull? off road of course…. my my so little performance data.

my expectations is getting to 4 runner hp numbers or better with an off road setup - intake, long headers, catless and exhaust

When I get time I’m gonna do an NA 91 tune with full NA bolt on. Was considering 87 but I figure might as well treat the truck. It’ll be, TRD intake, 4Runner TB, IMS, exhaust cam 3degree, short headers with cats, rooster Y, vibrant resonator + TRD, and HPtuners. Only problem will be the dyno will be 1000m above sea and different days but there will be a before and after.

Less smelly tailpipe and hopefully smoother sound. Gonna do large V-band ones because my engine exhaust temps will be higher than normal and probably eat cats.

It does a calculated torque that can be useful. Custom math to get horsepower.

Im sure most dont want disappointed by the sad numbers our trucks make

maybe. any reason you are not dyno tuned?

but i’m really surprised after 2+ yrs no na dyno posted. seems like hptuners or a hptuner tuner would have posted a dyno w/ basic bolt-ons by now to show case the product.

since you have not dyno’ed - how did you tune the a/f? data logging street pulls? how did you optimize the vvt and timing? push it till knocks and back off a little?

I don’t feel like I have anything to prove. No one here is trying to sell you anything.

HPTuners doesn’t tune vehicles. They’re in the business of proving tools to professional and hobby tuners.

I tune the A/F by ensuring my airflow and fuel models are accurate and put in the PE value I want the truck to run. If your data is correct you’ll get the Lambda you command.

I’ve datalogged on the street, yes. Dirt roads, gravel roads, drag strips, and everywhere in between.

There is no perfect VVTi map. So what is your definition of optimized?

Most people run 86/87 in these trucks, and as such it’s about impossible to reach MBT without running into detonation. Beyond that, tuning ignition advance isn’t about advancing it until it knocks. It knocks with the stock tune. :)

i’m not suggesting you have anything to prove. not sure where that came from. and didn’t say you or anyone is trying to sell me anything. just asking for info on a nice looking product.

just asking why you have not dyno’ed to understand how you verify your changes? so really no need do data log to verify? just use good numbers?

so will the ecu adjust a/f even in open loop (WOT) to a target? so a/f verification not necessary since ecu can auto adjust to a target value even in open loop? sweet!

vvt - optimized / tuned / adjusted for max hp? in the video i posted, hptuners guy made a comment about how he found the sweet spot. so wonder how you verify your vvt changes?

sure it knocks. do you add timing for 87? is stock timing aggressive or conservative for 87? i would tune for 93. is there any info for timing on 93? or would i have start from scratch - trial and error?

so i did a little googling the fuel trims will tell me if a/f needs tweaking.

so just add bolt-ons, drive it, then review fuel trims and tweak as needed and repeat until fuel trims net zero / become balanced. so no need to data log a full 3rd / 4th gear pull. would be nice to have baseline starting point. so do you access the fuel table to adjust fuel in individual cells?

so. vvt would need a full pull on a dyno or hptuners virtual dyno power calculations - would be nice to have baseline for basic na mods.

then timing would stay the same unless you wanted to tune for higher octane 91, 93, etc. also would be nice to have a baseline for 93 even if it was on an stock setup. to minimize trial & error method.

Just tune for 87. Why waste your money on fuel for 91 or 93 for a NA setup. Heck even with my supercharged race truck I only tune for 91. Can’t always find 93, cost is higher, and the gains aren’t worth it. Never understood why NA guys even wanted to tune for 91.

how much power are putting down?

i agree it’s not worth it… i’ve burned a lot of money tuning cars over the years but it’s a fun hobby. what else am i going to do with my money? play golf?

i run 93 in stock trim. $200/yr. cost. it’s like adding fuel cleaner to every tank, cylinder head runs cooler, cleaner fuel system and minimizes timing retard.

not sure there is logic to speeding $3k for a 30-40hp na setup on a 4,300# vehicle.

Similar build and tune put 330hp to the tires I believe at sea level. On 33” tires. So me with 37” tires at 7000 ft elevation is probably back down to 250hp to the tires. But to me the drivability changes from the tune make up for the peak hp gains. I could care less about peak hp. Give me gains at 3k rpm and a better more drivable trans tune and really wake up the truck.
