Recovery Straps

Not quite sure where to post this question but since I have a 2nd Gen, why not here.
I am in the market for an inexpensive yet functional set of recovery straps. I don't OR so usage will just for emergencies if I happen to come across someone stuck. I almost got stuck in my driveway twice after our last 20" now storm and almost had to pull out the tractor. The other day a girl at work got marooned in a snow bank and I always wish I had some recovery straps, just in case.
2008 DC with tow package so I have to power and hitch for a shackle mount. I don't want to break the bank but always like to be prepared, like having 15 foot jumper cables on hand.

go to your local tractor supply or hardware store and they should have recovery straps. Dont get ones that have hooks on them, those are tow straps and dont stretch.

2" wide and 20'-30' long would be plenty for what your wanting to use it for.

I got mine for around 35-40 bucks a few months ago, Ive used it once pulling a jeep out of a mud hole

I have a drop hitch with a reciever shackle that I attach the rope to.

 

If only I had a TSC near me, I would be living at that place, maybe its not such a bad thing that its not very local. I will do some searching online also but I know there are so many options out there and this forum seems to weed out the bad. I have seen the horror stories with the hooked ends, those have already been ruled out.

 

Most auto parts stores have them. That's where I got mine, it was about $30. I've pulled a jeep out of a ditch and yanked some shrubs out last summer.

 

I agree with Zombie. 2x20 or 2x30 should be plenty.

If you have a shackle mount use it, if not you could use just the pin. The consensus is that this is safe.

I've got a tow chain in my truck. I bought it at Home Depot or Lowes for $30 I think. I believe it's rated for 10,000 lbs, it's not something you'd want if you off-road and use recovery equipment often but for emergency use it works well. I used it a couple times in this last storm to pull out a couple trucks. I like it over a recovery strap because I put a lock on it and run it through the motorcycle wheel in the summer.

Try and get a snatch dtrap. They are more durable. Used mine over 100 times oulling people off the beach. I got a nifty d-ring hitch for receiver.

Amazon is a lot cheaper than what I paid for my stuff locally

 

I think there is one in the Coventry area, but I could be wrong. You could also try Harbor Freight in Fall River, Ma. They had 2 x 20' and 2 x 30' straps with the loop on the ends. I think they were like 25 or 30 bucks.

 

Pulling people out can be a pain, the vehicle being recovered probably will not have any recovery points. You are going to end up laying in the snow try to rig an attachment point, then you are going to ruin your $30 snatch strap .

I won't ruin my strap if the other vehicle doe's not have a place to hook a shackle. If they have a way to do it and not ruin my equipment, then they better attach it properly

 

i ordered an arb snatch strap from 4 wheel parts for $52 shipped and it's a lot better to use than a regular tow strap.

Most cars and mini-vans and hell, even a lot of trucks, don't have decent recovery points. Our tacos lack anything good in the rear if you don't have something to put into the receiver.

That's why I think getting some "sacrificial" nylon webbing or a short 6ft strap to wrap around things like axles or frame members is a good idea.
