Finally replacing my stock "Dunflops"....wanting new AT tires and trying to stay under $1000. I've narrowed it down to 3 tires:

    Yokahama Geolander AT
    Firestone Destination AT
    Bigfoot AT

I've got quotes from local dealers for roughly the same price on all 3 brands. My dream tire is the Goodyear Duratrac...but too much $$ at the moment.

Anyone have strong feelings (good or bad) about one of these 3? Am I missing something in the affordable and still somewhat agressive looking AT tire world?

    Thanks.

Where are you shopping and what size are you looking for? You can easily get into Duratrac's for under $1000.

Bridgestone Dueler Revos 70k still have 1/2 tread. Great on street STICKY. Great in sand, mud, slush. It will keep you under your budget too. Only balanced twice. Good luck on your search!

I would buy them from Discount Tire. You have 2 choices of getting tires from them:

1: Drive to Farmington NM which looks like is about an hour from you? That route the tires will cost $200 each, out the door about $950 plus a $40 rebate = $910.

2: Order them from www.discounttiredirect.com, there they will cost you $193 each with free shipping. Your out the door will be $772-$40=$732 and then you can take them to a local shop to have them mounted.

The $40 rebate for Duratracs: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findPromotions.do?pgid=423

You could be into 265/75/16 Duratracs for about $800!

and owned by the French (Michelin)..

Cooper is an American Company and the tires are made in America (recommend the Discoverer ATR)...

However, you are putting them on a Japanese brand truck that may have been assembled in Mexico! So, does being American really mean so much any more???

I've looked into buying the tires on-line...definetely a money saver. However, your looking at paying for a rotation and balance every 5K miles over the life of the tires. At 50k, that can pretty much negate the savings of the on-line bargain. Something to be said for the free rotations, flat repair, etc. you get from buying the tires at a shop in the town you live in......

When you buy tires, lifetime rotations/balancing/flat repair are a separate charge, that is not included with the cost of the tire. If you buy the tires online and then pay a local shop to mount and balance them, that shop cost covers those services, not the tire cost. If the shop is wrapping all that up into one package, you should ask what the cost of the tire is without those services.

Also, balancing every 5k miles isn't necessary. With years of experience in the industry, I still only balance my tires if I get a vibration (which I've only had happen about twice in the last 10 years). Why fix what's not broken?

And there's nothing wrong with rotating every 5k, but you really only need to every 6k-8k miles.

I have the Geolandar AT-S and they ROCK. I have had them on about 20k miles and they look brand new. Have taken them cross country on the highway, daily driven, through deep sand, snow, gravel, and everything in between, and they have been flawless. I have not been stuck at all since I bought these tires. They are quiet and ride smooth at 90mph on the highway.

My buddy ran Destination ATs on his FJ for 80k miles before he had to trash them and he couldn't say enough good things about them either.

My Yokos: 285/75/16 on 16x8 Racelines, on 2.5" lift:

And some recent wheeling in the desert outside Alamosa, up in your neck of the woods. The GMC is also on 285 Geolandars:

Brett...you talked me into the Duratrac math...with the rebate and the free shipping (plus mounting costs), it was almost $350 cheaper. I can't wait to get those puppies on my truck!

Depends on the shop. We've got Townfair Tire out here and free rotations every 5,000 miles, flat repair and front end alignment are included in any cost they provide. They also have free winter tire change over for the life of the tires. Their base prices are high but they meet any price you can find and so far they've treated my girlfriend and I well.
