What gear ratio to go with on 35 inch tires

New to the form I currently own a 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD6 speed manual I am running 35 inch tires and I was wondering what you would recommend as far as gearing for the differential

If it was an automatic, I'd tell you 5.29 all day long.

4.88 on 35s is equivalent to stock 31s on the stock 4.30 ratio. (in terms of engine speed to road speed correlation.)

If you were happy with that level of torque, then you should go with 4.88s. If you feel you still want a little more torque in each gear, then by all means you should go for 5.29.

For reference, (assuming 35" tires) the 4.88 would put you at 2350/2800 RPM at 70 MPH in 6th/5th, while the 5.29 would put you at 2550/3000 RPM at 70 MPH in 6th/5th.

 

Thanks for all the advice guys gave me a lot to think about. As far as fuel consumption on 4.88 to 5.29 goes any opinions on that ?

 

it will pob not be much different on either gearing. the big factor that is going to hurt you is the tires themselves. the gearing wont solve the MPGs and likely will still see lower MPG.

If you offroad or will offroad the truck you also should look into trimming your fenders. They will become victims at some point. Normal driving likely won't make a difference.

Nice looking truck as someone noted. the color-matched bumper is a nice touch.

 

The fenders have already been trimmed I also ended up notching my frame about an 1 1/2 with a welded block off plate for clearance so that is no issue . I do all types of custom fabrication mostly on European sport vehicles in my shop the Tacoma is my daily driver I have and love driving this thing more than I do my Gt3 some times

Get a tune like KDMax first and see if it's satisfactory. I did and off-the-line response is sufficiently good, that I plan to stick with stock gearing. I have an AT.

Note that 5.29s are weaker due to the finer gear teeth, so you are more likely to break them. 4.56s and 4.88s shouldn't have this problem at the Tacoma's stock power level.

 

Fuel consumption will go up as the final drive goes up, but not in any meaningful amount. It really depends on how you drive, and the heavier wheels are going to slash fuel economy much more than gearing change.

When lower final drives are specified, there are diminishing returns in fuel economy, and trust me, Toyota spec'd the Tacomas to have the lowest final drive possible to the point that any further gains in efficiency would be greatly overshadowed by the hindered performance. That means we have plenty of wiggle room for choosing higher final drives to improve performance without impacting fuel efficiency much at all.

4.30 vs 4.88 we're talking about maybe 5 miles off an entire tank of fuel, and 4.30 vs 5.29 maybe 15 miles off an entire tank. The Tacoma's 3.5 engine is pretty efficient at any RPM from 1100 to 3000 thanks to port and direct injection. If we were talking 4.30 vs 6.10, then yes, you could start shaving 50 miles off an entire tank of fuel. Of course that's an extreme example though. Hope this helps.

I have a manual, 285/75/17s(close to 34 inch tires) and run 4.88 gears. I wish I did it sooner. Can't speak much on going 5.29s on 35s. All I can say is I am able to cruise up hills with less rowing of gears. If you go 5.29s, let us know how you like em!

Tire size 35
3inch lift
Bilstein shocks
Adjustable control upper control arms
Custom made adjustable plates for the lower control arm for caster and camber extra adjustment
Cut about 1 1/2 from BMC and welded block off plate
Fenders and flares were also trimmed for clearance
Over all took me a while to get it to shit the way it looks with out any rubbing . also the front bumper was a big help allowing me to push the wheel forward.
