i have a problem with my compass and temperature.

My 07 display went out, so I googled Tacoma Temperature & Compass Display and it led me to this thread! What an awesome site! My 510 chip connections looked fine, but since the display wasn't working anyway, I gently re-soldered all of them and Viola! the display now works like a charm! Thanks so much!!!

 

Sam's isn't working in her 06 either. I told her to take it in for warranty but she hasn't yet

Here's the link. I've used this guide to fix a couple of Tacoma's at the used car dealer I work at. Worked everytime. Just be patient and sometimes you have to try it a couple of times before it will work. It was nice to practice on some trucks that were not mine so I can fix mine when it does break.

Not trying to be an a$$, but search is a wonderful function.

 

Follow the fix it yourself thread and it will be good as new. Mine went out and I fixed it by following the thread. Research it on here and good luck. It's and easy fix.

 

I tried resaudering all my 510s and mine still does not work.. I looked at the sensor behind the grille and the mount that hold it in place is broken. could the sensor be possibly broken? or is it not working because its not mounted.?

 

Sometimes you have to try soldering it a couple of times before it works, also try pressing down on the 510's when the solder is still a little hot. That's how I had to do it. But it is possible that when you tried repairing it that you fried the circuit board, so you may have to buy a new one (hopefully not).

The mount for the sensor being broken will not cause the display to go out. It may cause inaccurate readings, but not total failure. If you want to know if the sensor is good, you need a volt meter and ohm out the sensor and make sure it has a reading and is not open.

 

I had mine fixed by Brian @ Brians Speedometer @ 479-652-2258. He charged me $35 for the repair and $5 s&h . Had it done and back in 4 days total . Pretty easy to remove . 1st, open sunglasses compartment , remove the one #2 phillips head screw. gently grab frt w/ both hands and pull down the frt then slid the whole unit forward , Unsnap the larger of the two connectors , w/ torx bit undo the three screws and remove cover , BE carefull on this part , there are four little grey tabs w/ fingernails or small flat screwdriver open them up and out pops the pcboard w/ display. Id then put it all back together so ya dont loose stuff . Ship off the unit . When putting back youll see these two pointed tabs that hopefully still have the clips (i lost one because i didnt know what the hell iwas doin ) If these fall off in removal , just push them back on w/ pointed/sharp side pointing up to the roof,slid the back in 1st and then line of the two tabs to the metal square holes and push them up into said holes ,, throw in that last #2 phillips head and your done .. Trust me , you can do itall with the small plug still attached and the unit just hangin down .. Have fun !!

Just fixed mine myself, pull it out yourself and check the resistors, 1 screw in the sunglass compartment and pull down from the compass side, it pops right out, 3 screws take out the compass= pop off the cover and look at the resistors, mine had fallen completely off, took it to a electronic repair shop and let them soder it back on, 30 min job cost me $10

 

So I just noticed my compass/temp display went out in my 06 Tacoma with just over 50k miles. I pulled the display and processor board out as instructed for this fix, however the 510 chips look ok. No separation or heat spots found anywhere. Is it best just to solder it anyway? If so where do I solder? The 510 chips are tiny and I can see solder getting everywhere. Any help would be awesome. Is there a fuse out maybe? My overhead lights work still in the same console with compass/temp display as well as my brake lights (I heard they were on the same circuit). Thanks!

 

It looks like there is nothing wrong but just go over the edges with some sauder and let it cool. Test before you put everything back together. It will work. My temp guage did not look damaged at all. After i went over all four sides it started working again.

 

a friend of mine builds circuit board prototypes. he showed me some of his work, and some of them have resistors the size of big salt grains. effen tiny!!

he looked at my 510 resistor and said it was HUGE. i messed mine up trying to DIY it while drunk. he tested it and got the 51 ohms..but had to flip it over to get a better contact.

he went thru the board mumbling about "tracing" this and that, and bridgeing things. he said he improved it..lord knows what the eff he did.

he had a spool of braided copper that he used to pull the old solder off, and cleaned the contacts with some solution.

he said that toyota thru that thing together. it is all better now. he did all the work under a microscope. it was cool to watch.

 

Thanks everyone for the great write-up of this easy fix. For $15 dollars for a cheap solder gun and solder and 15 minutes (uninstall, solder, reinstall) I was able to solder both ends of the 510's. Works like a champ now! I don't know why anyone would not just do this themselves and save time and money.

 

There is a link in the forums to fix this very,very easy i had the exact problem took longer to dissassemble it than it did to fix it just follow the steps in this forum.. about 2 minutes and simple.

 

I've got an 06 Tacoma and the direction indicator states that the truck is headed SW, and it doesn't matter which direction the truck is pointing. Where is the sensor that needs changing in this truck?

 

these fail on all models and years. ive had three buddies whom have all fail around 70k

 

You guys are great I love saving $900. I am needing to change my brakes if anyone could send me a link to a thread on that its an 06 tacoma

ok, so you guys say that a solder joint might be broken,.
how do i get into and remove the circuit board?
The display went dead yesterday and today it was back on for about 20 minutes then went dead again.
