Is this clutch pedal spring oriented correctly?

Yes, it looks oriented correctly. However, there are supposed to be some bushings that go over the ends of the spring, and on the center of it to prevent metal on metal movement. I don't see those in your pic. Those torsion springs are more trouble than they are worth in my opinion, I would recommend removing it and replacing with a linear spring. Better clutch feel and no bushings.

any downsides to getting rid of the spring altogether? i hear the clutch fluid provides enough back pressure that a spring isn't needed to help the pedal return to the top

 

Not sure on the downsides, I didn't drive without a spring for any length of time. My concern would be the clutch pedal returning all of the way to the top. When my torsion spring was being weird I'd have to put my foot underneath the pedal and pull it up.

 

The clutch pedal will only return as far as the fluid pushes it.

The pedal will stop where your pedal free play begins if you can live with that .

Just like the old clunky spring with the worn bushings your pedal will not return to the top .

if your pedal has no free play and your master cylinder is always under a slight pressure it will return all the way to the top.

 

My pedal was not coming up all the way- couldn’t use cruise control. Popped that lateral spring out and tossed it and installed a brake pedal spring in its place. Clutch pedal comes up, no noise and much better feel. People talk about going to the store and making their own Springs. I went with a brake spring because if you think about how much abuse your brake pedal gets on a daily basis you know the springs will hold up better. There is a tab above the clutch pedal on the dash that is metal and you Loop one end around that and the other around the pivot pin on top of the clutch pedal. There are instructions on here somewhere. It took me 10 minutes at most and for seven dollars was probably the best mod I could’ve ever done. I’ve had it this way for about eight months now and no difference from day one.

 

Without any spring there is a good chance the clutch pedal won't come up quite enough to hit the cruise control cancel switch, making your cruise control inoperative.

There is probably still a reason a spring should be on there. Otherwise they wouldn't bother putting them on models that don't come with cruise.

 

My pedal is absolutely trashed. I replaced the bushing on the spring but the pivots are so wallowed out there is too much backlash and the pedal sometimes sticks down.

 

Time for a linear spring.
