The SKINNY on skinny tires

You will most likely rub with that wheel setup. The negative offset is going to push the turning radius outside of the wheel well - away from the vehicle. If you're set on those wheels, you can remedy the rubbing if you aren't opposed to a CMC and/or cutting/remolding some inner fender plastic.

If you don't want to do any cutting and you really want the 255/85/16's you'll probably need to ditch the negative offset wheel choice.

Here is an entire thread dedicated to running that same tire size with stock suspension and stock wheels. The caveat is sticking with more positive offset wheels. You might possibly get away with a 0 offset wheel, but that pure speculation on my part.

Will the 255/75/17 Wildpeaks be okay for a winter of highway driving. No off-roading ???

thinking of having those bought and installed this week instead of waiting until spring if this rubber thing doesn’t get better I may end up spending hundreds more 6 months down the line.

 

Never had the skinnies but the 285/70/17 I ran were killer on the road in fresh snow and even ice, great tires for snow.

 

Thanks for the feedback I knew I was bound to get a lift if I wanted this setup to clear. Do you think a 3” lift is sufficient without rubbing?

 

Adding a lift will very likely help, but it might not eliminate all potential rubbing as you cycle the suspension. For the most part you'll be good though.

 

Those will be sufficient. I love my Wildpeaks in the winter!

Everyone’s set up will be different. Some tires can run bigger then others. I ran my 255/80r17 on my truck with a 2” level and cleared the cab mount with much room to spare. Put a 3” Elka lift on and would rub like crazy. Every time I turned into a driveway I’d rub. It all depends on your alignment specs as well. You can push your caster to 3 or 4 degrees to get the tire away from the cab or you can just cut it. I did a CMC to gain more clearance. I also plan to go with a skinny 35 in the future so I just cut to get it over with

 

That new rub with the fancy Elka stuff is because at 3 inches you need upper control arms to get a decent alignment. Not only would that allow clearance but the truck would drive much better and have better tire wear. The extra inch costs a lot more to do right.

 

I have SPC UCA along with a lot of other work done. I don’t know what the previous alignment specs were but after I installed the lift, my alignment was set to 2.5 caster (set to the recommended 2 degrees on SPC and 0.5 degrees on LCA), 0.5 camber and 0.05 toe. It was either pay another $150 for an alignment if I changed the SPC degrees to add more caster or do a CMC. I did the CMC myself for next to nothing and this allows me to plan for the further when I put 35’s on

Super interesting, this is a great example for ppl to see how things can go. Nice setup! The ability to do the CMC yourself changes things for sure.

Obviously you are running FJ wheels, which had a 15mm better offset than the TRD Sport wheels that came on that year (assume the same for other wheels on 2nd gen, but only know about the sport wheels). Any lift and any rubbing?

I'm lifted around 2-2.5 w/ ICON ucas. It rubbed a tiny bit on the front mudflaps backing out of the shop yesterday, I'll get up in the woods and feel it out more later this week.

Really liking the look so far. But already thinking about a modest regear after driving home yesterday

 

We are all considering a modest regear. Except those who have already done it.

 

What's the consensus? 4.10? 4.56? Should I just call ECGS and ask them?

 

4.10 isn't really enough to make a noticeable difference. If you're going to the expense, go at least 4.56. This seems to be the sweet spot...at least for 2nd gen. Seems like 3rd gen benefits the most from 4.88 and the bigger tire guys even going 5.29.

I have no personal experience. Just years of reading about it on TW.

 

I have the KD Max tune and actually don’t want to regear now. I’m enjoying the way my truck drives. If I went with a larger tire then I’d definitely consider it but right now I think it’s perfect

AFAIK though, there is no "tune" for us 2nd gen guys. So our best option now is still to regear.....or supercharge...
