I only have 1400 miles on and looking at tires for the future. I am interested in possibly going the pizza cutter route with 255/85/16 tires but the closest thing to an AT is the Cooper DISCOVERER ST MAXX. I am just wondering if these do okay for everyday driving in all sorts of weather conditions on road. I like to go to the mountains and if it snows I just want to make sure they are not super scary to drive with I have no experience with hybrid tires or M/Ts. I always ran Nokian Rotiva AT on my full-size truck which was amazing in wet and snow.

I am also wondering do I need to upgrade the Upper control arm, U joints, or ball joints to run these? I am holding off on lifting the truck for a good while yet and going to work on other suspension upgrades first.

No you don’t need to modify the suspension on stock rims to run the 255/85 if u want

Besides the thread already posted, there is this one too.

Yes, one downside to tall skinnies is the lack of options. If you think it’s bad for 33s, check out the options for tall skinny 35s. :)

Most people in Minnesota drive around every winter on all season tires. My guess is that any all terrain and maybe any mud terrain will be better than that. My Dick Cepak Extreme Terrains are great in snow; maybe not compared to a dedicated snow tire though. They are M/S rated but I don’t think there is any standard for that rating.

Curious what is Pizza cutter about 255? That is barely 3.7% more narrow. Likely unnoticeable to the naked eye.

    This is pizza cutter

It’s noticeable when compared to a 285/75R16, the more typical 33.

I was also looking at that option as tire choice is so much better. selection. I guess I still gain a bit of clearance. I been eyeballing the new Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT's but the sizes so far are all way too big without mods hopefully they will start making smaller sizes for tacoma's soon.

Those Mickey Thompson’s come in a skinny 35 that I was eyeing, but not in 16”. If I go 35’s my first choice is still the radial super swampers.

I see those too but would probably need a lift to fit those without rubbing issues.

A suspension lift is not the solution. Lifting does not make the wheel well any bigger. Trimming, pounding, wheel offset/backspacing, and a CMC are the solution, but hopefully less so with the tall skinnies. There are some more expensive options as well, like replacement wheel wells and cab mount relocation kits. A 1" body lift is another option. Spindle gussets might be necessary as well.

Nope not doing anything too crazy if I can get 1-2 inches with no cutting or major mods I might do it this is my everyday driver and not looking to do much more than some medium to medium-hard trails. I am on road probably 80% of the time and will never go bouldering or anything crazy.

I got some reading to do before I make any big decisions I can ride stock for some time just don't how well the factory tires are gonna do. In my experience most factory tires are not the best by any means these seem better at least than what came on my old Dodge 1500 stock those Wrangler SR-A are garbage.

Although I do drive over boulders, I didn’t want to cut up my truck either. That’s why I went with skinny 33s.

The pizza cutters honestly sucked they looked good but don’t do as well in snow where I live and they were hard to balance. Just my two cents but I’d reccomend getting offset wheels and going w 255/80/17 so you can get a three peak rated tire which the st maxx is not

Wet or dry snow? I live in NM now and it will be mostly powder snow here more than likely if it was anything like when I lived in Flagstaff AZ.

Pretty much all the 255/85R16s are poor choices for snow and ice.

STT's are crap on ice (no on studs them), great in deep snow, but that can be said for any mud terrain.

I'd stick to 265/75R16 like the majority of us and drive safer in the mountains.

Tires like Falken Wildpeaks, BFG KO2, Toyo AT3 will give much better snow and ice performance.

Ideally you want a dedicated snow set. I run 245's for my winter set.
