Unpleasant OVtune experience

    Hey all.

I've been off and on this forum for years now, but haven't had the opportunity to contribute till now. As you can tell from the title of the thread, unfortunately my comments come from the "unhappy" side of things.

I have a 2015 Taco with the 4.0 motor. Sluggish out of the hole, and shifts/doesn't shift at odd spots. Full disclosure- I have 1" taller tires on my Taco and I was looking for a way to get the shift points cleaned up and gain throttle response at the same time. After contacting OVtune, I was assured that if I purchased their product, it would address my issues....as it turns out, not so much.

In the name of not being "That guy", I'm not going to go into the minutia that has unfolded over a 6 week period of time. To most, it will be boring and I suspect it has already been hashed over enough. That said, I eventually found myself in a position where I had to beg for help to try to understand the product, only to find out the product they told me would work didn't have the ability to flash my truck with anything other than a stock tune. Disappointment. The one statement from OVtune that left me feeling helpless was this- "We get customers all the time that don't even know what they purchased and then blame us." How insulting. I replied back that if so many customers have this happening "all the time", that maybe they shouldn't be pointing the finger of blame at the very people who are simply trying to understand and use the product they are selling. A fire hose tirade was the response I received in return. It is clear to me that Matt at OVtune has some anger control issues.

I'm not the smartest card in the deck, but I also consider myself reasonably intelligent too. I've been repairing/working on my vehicles my whole life, but I guess my inquiries for clarification were unreasonable. I now find myself with a product that I do not know if I trust to put on my truck...I'll plead ignorance here as I've tried to understand the vernacular Matt was using, but that wasn't good enough I guess.

If there's someone on here who can help me understand where to go next, I'm all ears. I just want to understand so I know if it is wise to move forward?

    Thanks, Stevo

As far as I know they are banned on here and all "tune meet up threads" are banned as well. I could be wrong on that though.

the way communication has gone with OV around here is unfortunate. you are not the only one simply seeking some answers and guidance.

if you want more info about the product, you may check https://forum.vftuner.com/ although i'm not sure you'll get improved responsiveness there, it seems to come & go like it did here. @tonered, a member here, is a moderator there and has product knowledge... but he's not representing OV. so he has the option to chime in. i would try and offer some infos but i'm a 3G and know nothing of OV's 2G offerings. good luck.

It sounds like you got the Software Bundle, but not the Tune Pack that you need to get tunes for your Taco.

About half true. I have not seen the meetup threads getting locked?

    Thanks!

OVTUNE is a development lab, they suck at everything else. I’ve been saying this for years. Their motto should be “Over-promise, Under-deliver.”

They announce a new product, string people along for months or years before releasing something that is incomplete, then string buyers along for additional months or years while they work on it and deliver terrible communication to paying customers. They suck.

Nope I meant exactly what i said, HP Tuners has more support on the 2nd gen side of the fence vs OVtune (vf tuner) on the 2nd gen.

I really really like the ov tune pack I installed on my truck. I really have not have a good experience getting help from Ov tune. Matt does care, but he is not a good communicator in my opinion. I got messes over by a person Matt ended up getting rid of, but then even Matt could not make sense of what all had happened.

It was a disaster. He needs someone he can trust, that understands customers, and how to help them, fairly. Some people are unreasonable, some people aren't. Treating reasonable people like the unreasonable will destroy a business.

Again Matt does actually care, he is just really not great at communicating.

@OP, if you're planning to move forward with a tuning platform, then I'd also recommend HPtuners and working with @JustDSM to get you tuned up.
FWIW, and call me crazy, but I think these 2nd Gens are decent out of the hole. But if you think the 2nd Gens are sluggish, don't bother looking into the 3rd Gens. And that's where Matt's time was mostly spent, with the 3rd Gens.

I think most people that has followed OVTune's past threads can relate to your frustration. Lot's of promises and excuses and not much to show from it all.

I know you've already invested a good amount of money into OVTune and having to consider another tuning platform I can understand may be too much or excessive. That said, what is it that you're looking to get out of this tune? Is it worth more of your time and money to just go for a supercharger? Or perhaps consider regearing a bit if you don't mind a little higher RPM's on the highway.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought regearing was more effective for improving shift points after taller tires are installed

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I was able to talk with John and he was able to confirm what I already suspected. I have a product that doesn't go to the lengths I needed it to go to. I needed a tune that also addressed shift points and higher octane fuel.....unfortunately, I didn't figure out until 5 weeks into the process, that what was sold to me in confidence, simply didn't deliver. Was this my fault for not understanding? Arguably. But, in my defense, it is pretty clear that I'm not the first person to run into this as evidenced by the many posts to that effect. Regardless of all this mess, I just don't understand why someone would belittle and cast blame on the very customers who are trying to use his product? I just can't make sense of that.

I will be working with John to see if I can afford to go down another tuning path after effectively wasting money. It hurts to eat that kind of money in todays world.

Am I going to use the OVtune pack for whatever I can gain from it?? At this point, I no longer feel comfortable with it and decided to not flash my truck with it. To be clear, even after 6+ weeks of frustration, I didn't ever get it onto my truck once, and it is in effect, a brand new product. If anyone out there is comfortable with OVtune, I've got one for sale that I'll make you a great deal on!

    Thanks again all. Stevo

Credit card charge back if they won't take a return for selling you the wrong product and/or promising that it would do something it would not.

Then join us in the HP Tuner world, where support and community is there. Engine and (automatic) transmission shift points, line pressure, etc are all available to tune.
You can even same some cash if you have someone closeby that has the MPVI2 (OBD II device) and a laptop set up for tuning, you just need to spend about $200 in credits to tune your truck and save the $250+ on the MPVI2 device itself.

Sorry Matt has been a dick to you, but that's the main reason OVTune has been banned here. Explosive, angry rants at customers rather than decent customer support.

Normally, I would recommend a credit card chargeback as a last resort, but with the continual deception from OVTune, you're not the only one that has been duped. I agree with you here:
