    I know. /me bows head

I really need to find an alternative to pool noodles. Cant find them, since out of season. The Ladder Line always ends up ridding on the roof shingles.

Hardware stores carry closed cell foam insulation that slips over pipe. Just like a pool noodle.

Hey y'all, just looking for rig install ideas. I'll be running an FT-857D with a Comet CSB-790A, and eventually an old ATAS-100 when I upgrade. -K7RAO

Since I am UP TO DATE on things, just came into these messages about 2 months old

It depends on the range. APRS wasn't intended for a higher frequency than once every 10 minutes or something like that. You can use it, but, just throwing it out there. Out in the open like that, your range will only be a couple miles depending on the surroundings using simplex. I've seen it done, but it's similar to the whole CB vs GMRS thing - everyone's gotta be on the same thing. You can have an amazing GMRS radio, but if your group is using CB, it's useless. Your whole group will need a radio with a good antenna for a range more than a mile or so. But, depends what you're doing if that's good or not. Just something to think about.

    'grats!

Ohhhh you say that like that's not tech and amateur too :D

Cool! What helped me was obviously a class, but the question pool is public - there are apps (browser and iphone, android etc) that have all the questions built as flashcards. There were a few questions I really did not understand completely, but I just knew the answer to look for.....

This is for CB but might give you some inspiration.

Got my vanity call sign today.

Was aiming for WT1FRT. Wet Fart. :D But, decided to go simpler. WA1ROB.

Snuck it in before they add costs for it (who knows when that'll happen), and in the same train, waiting for GMRS to come down before I get that license.

When is the GMRS license price supposed to drop? I am waiting for that to happen too.

Same time as amateur radio fees.

    https://www.arrl.org/news/fcc-application-fees-unlikely-to-go-into-effect-until-2022

This doesn't talk about GMRS but it's the same infrastructure - FCC said once the infrastructure was up to collect payments they would roll it out, without actually giving an expected date. So, I think that's as far as we all know. :notsure:

Just upgraded to general, I’m trying to figure out what I want for my first HF rig. Looking for something portable I think.

That's the only reason I got my amateur was for off road comms.

I'm thinking the anytone 50/40 will do the trick. I would like to do APRS but, meh. The use case for me doesn't warrant it, the money would be better spent elsewhere on the truck. Might even just land on the 40W Midland instead, too, TBD.

I won't do anything that's chinese or junk, I'm leaning toward the Motorola stuff but still daydream in Yaesu.
