2.7 oil filter causing rattle ?

2019 2.7 37k miles, I change the oil every 5-6k miles, it never goes past 6k miles.

Up to 33,500 miles I’ve used 0W-20 and Toyota filter. I got a free Mobil 1 filter with a oil change kit I bought from advance last year, never used it cause I bought 5 Toyota filters when I bought the truck brand new. I used all my Toyota filters I figured I’d use the Mobil 1 that was sitting in my tool box. At the same time I switched from 0w-20 to 5w-30 as I tow a lot and it was hot, like 85-100 degrees. This was in June. Immediately I noticed the truck was much quieter and smoother , especially under heavy load as I frequently tow 2500 pounds. Things have taken a turn.

The temps have now dropped into the low 40s overnight. Still on my 5w-30 and Mobil 1 filter. I have now noticed a noticeable clatter/rattle during start up. I do not know if this is due to some sort of mechanical failure internally (doubtful), the oil weight (also doubtful as in 2015 the manual called for 5w-30), or the oil filter (what I think the issue is). I do believe the drain back valves are different between M1 and Toyota oem filters, albeit I’ve never had them apart. Pictures/linked above is a comparison between oil filters and a comment that I know to be true , due to my experiences with other trucks.

Anti-drainback "valve" may just be getting a little more stiff now that the weather is turning cooler. Not sure if the M1 uses a silicone or nitrile rubber valve. I know everyone is gonna chime in and say the 5w30 is doing it, but that likely has nothing to do with it.

 

The clatter/rattle is not from the oil or the filter, highly unlikely.

Engines have a "voice" in colder weather during start up. The "voice" will disappear as the oil pressure comes up.

If you have doubts about the oil and filter, then change them.

while I tend to agree with you, I’ve owned the truck since day 1, it had zero miles on it when I went to test drive it. Owned for over 2 years now, I’ve put every mile on it. It’s never made this noise before, and it’s been down into the low 20s during my ownership

 

Mileage will open up clearances between parts.

Low 20s??? Not cold. Have you heard a V-8 from the 70s with over 120 kmiles start with temperatures in the -20*F range? You'd think a herd of gremlins with hammers had taken up residence under the hood.

 

Mine has always clattered a bit in the cold, but I’ve also always used 5w30 instead of 0w20. 0w20 will help with cold start up. It’s not anything to worry about. Between hydraulic valve lifters and the vvti system, there’s plenty of valve train components that will want to clatter until plenty of oil has flown through the entire system.

 

Low 40s is relatively warm in oil terms; I'm not inclined to think that the difference between 0W and 5W is going to make a noticeable difference at those temperatures, but your description of the noise does make me think of an oil issue. As you're still under warranty [hopefully], I'd head back to the dealer and get them to have a look at it.

 

FWIW......both 0w20 and 5w30 are useable down to -30C.

In the low 20*F range......I doubt if there is much discernible difference between the oils.

 

Same here always use 5w30. Owned truck since day 1. At 5 years 100000km (60k miles) in the winter -20 Celsius. I started hearing a rattle. Thought it was a rod bearing.
15 years and 300000km now. Same rattle in the cold.... But still going strong. So obviously nothing serious.

 

Changing filter brands may very well solve it. I've experienced this with several vehicles including my current 4.0L Nissan.

Another culprit is the battery. Slower cranking makes for less oil pressure when the engine fires.

 

I’m on original battery, have noticed it getting a little weaker. Gone are the days of batteries lasting 5-8 years

 

Same issue here on my 2018 SR 2.7
My mechanic said when he's seen it before, it's often the VVT at the tip of the camshaft, which is oil pressure regulated. Mine happens intermittently, for about 5-15 seconds on cold startup, so he recommended letting it settle down before driving it in the morning. Repair will become needed when it starts happening while driving. #notcheap

 

I also have a new kinda similar issue on my 2.7 MT. Upon intitial startup/or shutting it off I hear a loose sound briefly in the front end area.
My truck is a manual trans, I also hear the sound very clearly if i let the clutch out and lug the truck. Sounds like something is loose. No idea what it is, but its annoying.
