Argghhh! This is really annoying me now. I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma extended cab 4x4 6 cyl. Ever since I bought the truck at 114 k miles, I'd had to start the truck every morning for about 5 mins b4 I can take off, or else 2 gear shifts hard on the speedometer - shifts at about 2.8 rpm. I mean this happens when I slowly press on the gas. If I step on the gas normally it shifts at 3 rpm. Wierd...However, if I wait 5 minutes (til the rpm goes down to 1.2 rpm) it shifts fine. This especially happens when the truck has been sitting for a while - say 5+ hrs. It's really annoying and I have no idea what is wrong. I've changed spark plugs, cleaned MAF, took the TB off and cleaned it real good same for IAC, replaced the starter - it was dead when i was at school (not sure if it is related to this), and also replaced the fuel filter with no luck. I'm thinking now that it might be thermostat not working good, but my friend is telling me its not. Not sure what to do now and also don't want to start replacing stuff that doesn't correct the problem. Oh, and my truck is an automatic. Any ideas?

That was a fast reply, yes..you are right, but My dad used to have a truck with same model and everything, with his he only had to wait the longest 2 mins in the morning, and once it starts up it is good for the rest of the day. Any other suggestions?

All first gens have this "problem". When it's cold, the shift points are put up to a higher rpm so your oil temp can raise faster. When mine is cold it doesn't shift til 2600 rpms, but when warm it's about 2000 rpms. It's completley normal and you shouldn't worry about it.

Hey 707Bro, thanx for the link and info...*sigh in relief*..I thought it was only my truck that does this, maybe my dads truck did the same thing and we just never really pay attention to the rpm...I called and ask him if he remembers, he told me it didn't do that as he recalled. But hey, he owned truck long ago...I will keep this post up so other's with the same question can read on. Thanz again 707Bro, Im glad I found this amazing forum...
