Hey, don't beat yourself up too bad. We all make mistakes. Don't let these comments get to you. I have seen a lot of "things" people have tried to work on themselves and it not go well, the bring it the dealership I work for.
I misdiagnosed a internal engine failure and it was a bad catalytic converter. Read this.

All though if I did not catch it when I did it would have been a complete engine.

Wow, your flirting with disaster. In the photos it looks like you have the inner brake pad facing the wrong way which pushed out the backing plate. That metal wire clip is probably trashed and needs replacing. Since that inner brake pad is incorrectly installed and you drove on it, it probably dug into the rotor and the rotor may need to be machined or you will grind down that pad a lot sooner. There are two long thin metal rods, about the size of a straw, that hold the pads in place on either side and one appears to be missing. Also at the end of each pin is a hole and a spring loaded clip slides through those holes to keep those pins from sliding out. I would check the other side to see if you put it together correctly. If your not sure how everything goes together then buy a manual or go on the internet. I never drank while working on my vehicles, I live longer that way, besides it feels good to get the job done right the first time. Then have a beer or two.

From what I can tell we are looking at the drivers side front brake assembly. Since you were going forward that one pin held the pads in place. Had the pin been on the upper or other side and depending on how fast your were going, if you had braked those pads could have slid out and engaged the rim causing that one wheel to lock up sending you into oncoming traffic. At this point you should have your vehicle towed to a repair shop for a proper brake service and you should take a hard look at yourself. I don't know you so I'm not going to tell you what you can or cannot do, but this is your wake up call. Your free and able to laugh this off now, but next time you might not be so lucky. Good luck!

Maintenance man here at work changed his girl friends engine oil by draining the transmission fluid and adding an additional 5 quarts of oil to the engine. She complained her Forester didn't want to go up hills and smoke was coming from under the hood...

My dad and his neighbor buddy gratuated from the Anheuser-Busch School of Automotive...
Antics include; not tightening the wheel after a bearing job on the neighbor's ex-wife's truck. This resulted in her wheel passing her at 60mph and accusations of ill intent. When they prepped my brother's first truck(Nissan Hardbody), they removed the 'amplifier'... When said truck wouldn't start, they went garbage diving for the 'ecu' they had thrown out.

    Thanks for the help guys.

to be fair my Tacoma is the first vehicle I’ve ever worked on. Before that I couldn’t even change a tire. So it’s been a learning experience, one that I enjoy very much.
