6 wheel rotation and TPMS

    2” lift
    Hello Tacoma World,

    I am planning to buy two OEM rims for my 2017 Tacoma TRD OFF-ROAD. I have a nice bed rack, and I plan to mount the two rims and tires on the top of the bed rack. Main benefit: having two spares. Secondary benefit: six wheel rotations. But, mainly having two spares. The final concern was the TPMS. Do I need to do anything to make the TPMS work after a rotation? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    The 3rd Gen ECU/PCM will Only See 4 sensors and having a 5th can and will cause the TPMS in the dash to “crash”.

    It will not work.
    What may work best for you is the TPMS PVC tube. Put all four sensors in a PVC chamber with a Schrader fill valve to pressurize the tube to 32psi and the truck will see that.

    I’ve had a spare in rotation (5 tires) with a Tpms in it and have had no problems with the dash crashing.

    Your cost benefits are flawed, especially once you include the extra mpg for carrying around 150lbs of extra weight.

    I mean, it's cool to carry them for looks, but at least admit that's what you are doing - there is no place in North America that you need two spares.

    No since the PCM only eases 4 sensors.
    Yes, Techstream shows a 5th position and tells you that it doesn’t work for the 3rd Gen.

    I’ve also had the spare completely off the truck and driven around spareless. But, the right rear likes to read a different pressure here and there despite the fact I’ve used a wifey system to fill all four. I always figured the tires that spin activate the sensors. But I don’t rely on my tpms for gauge readings. I use two different tires gauges.

    Instead of the 2nd spare buy a compressor, tire repair plugs, and tools. In the last 20 years I've plugged at least 20 tires for myself and others without ever jacking up the vehicle. It is safer, faster, and a lot easier than trying to mount a spare. In several cases the tire was damaged beyond repair, but the temporary repair held until I was able to drive it into a tire store and let them do the work on a lift.

    Only once in that time did I have a tire damaged so badly I couldn't plug it and had to resort to the spare.
