Hey guys, I've got a 06 Tacoma Prerunner, it has 237,000 miles, and the throwout bearing has gotten super loud it has had the squeak for a while but now it squeals on and off. Supposedly the clutch was replaced before I bought it at 68,000 miles. It's been an amazing truck.

So I want to replace the bearing and the clutch. Do you have any recommendations on a good all-around clutch? Nothing crazy expensive, since the truck does have 237k miles.

Are there any other things I should do while the transmission is out? 3 gear grinds occasionally how much work is that to repair?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

With the amount of miles a stock clutch lasts, I'd recommend staying with oem.

OEM is a good clutch. For the 3rd gear grind, maybe you can find a cheaper shop where you are, but I was quoted a rebuild of $4200 so I just bought a new transmission for $4600. You could try some Lucas 75w-140. Some say that makes a difference for grinding gears. That’s what I use now. I dilute it with a bit of OEM transmission fluid.

Do the rear main seal while you have access to it with the trans being off

    One option would be:
    Exedy clutch kit
    resurface flywheel
    CM hydroTOB (controversial topic)

I thought about URD Torque-U heavyweight flywheel + stage 2 clutch but they are out of stock

make sure everything outside of the trans works properly and that the gear oil is good, to verify that's allowing it to behave and shift properly
also keep in mind the factory drivetrain mounts suck

if that STILL doesn't fix it, I would not be surprised for there to be worn synchros
that is something I would DIY
    it's mechanical, bits and pieces
last rebuild kit I saw was for my old car $800ish parts. Much cheaper than $4k total paying someone else labor to fuck it up

If you have a garage or driveway, a second vehicle, and some time, you can replace a transmission.

I’d call URD because I know they have a solution to a squeaky throw out bearing which a lot of people complained about even after replacing theirs. Also, replace the pilot bearing if you’re diy’ing it - it costs like $10 along with the rear main seal.

Great point, I bought it from a Lexis dealer so I assume they used OEM Parts for the replacement? What about the TOB?

I swapped the oil to full synthetic a while ago just checked the level over the summer.

I thought I read that these trucks didn't have a pilot bearing? Am I mistaken?

throwout bearing. Slave cylinder is usually a rod that pushes forward on a fork. That fork connects to your pressure plate fingers using a bearing, to compress them when they use the pedal. To release the clutch.
Why? Because your pressure plate (part of circular clutch assembly) is spinning attached to the engine. So it has to connect with a (throwout) bearing. Otherwise it would be just the shift fork (acts as a lever arm) making straight contact to spinning pressure plate diaphragm fingers, which would grind metal.

I don't know if the Tacoma uses a pilot bearing or not (RA60F). Some vehicles do, some don't.
On certain cars that have one, sometimes it already comes pre-installed in a new flywheel, like for people putting a $200 LuK DMF in since DMF's cannot be resurfaced (doesn't apply to Taco which has SMF not DMF)

Okay, thanks. I'm familiar with how a clutch works. Looking for Tacoma-specific advice.

There is NO pilot bearing or bushing used on the 6-speed. Instead, a very large robust bearing is used on the input shaft just inside the transmission case.
