I think there's an important difference between social media and the DCM module. With social media, to a decent extent, you control what you share (especially with the privacy features on modern iOS and perhaps also Android). With the DCM module, you don't.

Agree with this 100%. A smartphone, tablet, or PC/laptop are things you choose to utilize (i.e. optional/recreational). If your work requires one, then you do work things on it. A vehicle is essential and very personal.

 

Data leaks related to my vehicles don't concern me; if Toyota or a Hacker wants to know that I prefer the Chick-Fil-A on the East-side of the city I live-in to the one on the West-side, so be it. No wife or daughter here, but I have a GF who has a CCW and carries regularly. Tracked or not people should always be aware of their surroundings.

Personally, I don't think Toyota is tracking to the degree that some in this thread think they are. Case-in-point every couple of months I get a letter or a phone call from the Toyota Dealer where I bought my Taco 1.5 years ago telling me it's due for service. My truck hasn't been back to the dealer (or any dealer for that matter) since the night I bought it; all of the services have been completed by me. The letters they send me all have a blank space where the mileage should be and the people who call me to schedule a service appointment always ask what my mileage is since it's not in their records. If Toyota was really tracking our vehicles like some say they are then I would expect that the letters and phone calls I receive would list the mileage, or a close approximation of it.

 

Your data by itself has little worth. The entire internet's worth of user data has much less worth than even that. Companies don't want a giant population that's not relevant to what they are tracking. The act of processing the data into a useable format for others to make decisions is what creates value. On the surface, Google is a search engine, but in reality, they are the world's largest ad/analytics data processing center. It takes massive amounts of knowledge, money, and economies of scale to make it work. They aren't selling your name, address, email. They are selling what search terms, products, etc., sell best in certain regions, demographics, etc. I read somewhere that grocery stores (I think Kroger...) have some of the craziest (personal) data collection practices to track the size of your family, age, gender, etc., it's no new practice.

As for social media, I'm in my 20's and I don't know a single person around my age that uses social media all that much. Facebook, for instance, is really struggling to attract younger demographics. I have a cousin in high school and most of the younger Gen-Z don't even have a Facebook or social media. Maybe it's a change in the right direction, who knows?

I'm not much into conspiracy theories, but I do feel like some of the viewpoints here are justified. Sure, it's not bad now, but I do believe that our privacy could be threatened without proper protection. I'm younger, I grew up only knowing some of these policies/practices. Maybe I'm desensitized to them compared to some of you older farts and just don't care as much. I think that's the battle you're facing.

If you break something Offroad, whether your fault or vehicle failure they could check the gps coordinates to see where the code went off. If your trying to get stuff covered by warranty could be interesting depending on your service dept.

 

One of my issues is Apple CarPlay and Siri -- the fact that I can't do anything with my voice while driving is a problem.

[PS: For those wondering why I use Siri when I'm a heavily pro-privacy person, let's just say I trust Apple more than Toyota or perhaps even the US Govt. when it comes to privacy]

 

Eh, I can still do speech to text messages even with the DCM disabled and that's really all I need. Hell, I don't even really need that.

 

Whereas this discussion is cool on its own, I just want to state an opinion. I think it's non-sequitur to give up the fight for privacy (e.g. with Toyota) just because the US Govt has incredible surveillance capabilities. The point is similar to how the police have to establish probable cause before they can search your property under the 4th amendment -- it makes it harder, so that only the cases where there is an actual need to investigate are investigated rather than blanket violations of privacy. Thus, I have no problem with the "black box" in the Toyota vehicles that can be read by law enforcement if there is a need to investigate a crash. My understanding is that it does not transmit: the data needs to be requested and Toyota can then provide the means to read it. This is akin to needing a warrant to search your home.

The DCM on the other hand, is like warrantless wiretapping. Also just because the Govt has the ability to track your vehicle with traffic cameras, license plate readers and such doesn't mean that we should abdicate the same data to any 3rd party that Toyota chooses to do business with. I trust the US Govt as an organization much more than let's say rental or insurance companies.

Nope, just plugged in and using Android Auto with my phone laying down in the wireless charging cubby. I'm not certain that the phone is not using its internal mic though. That's something I'll need to check at some point. The mic is disabled for phone calls and searching (like with maps), but speech to text works surprisingly well. It still baffles me that Toyota connected the mic to the DCM at all. Other than SOS, the DCM should have no access to that.

 

This is my best guess as well for the MIC signal. As for the MIC supply, here is a post I found, but this is a test on a Nissan Frontier, not on a Toyota vehicle:

In any case, it looks like MACC is a MIC Amplifier Power Supply, and probably is at +5V. But I would stick a multimeter and check the voltage. If someone has an oscilloscope (I don't), it would be nice to ensure that it isn't a signal line but a power line. Also the "CC" is confusing. Does it mean it's a constant current supply, or does is it just the "CC" from "VCC"?

On your topic, jump over to the 3rd-Gen Tacoma OEM Mic Adapter thread (targeting aftermarket HU). They have a lot of good background. Also maybe that guy will make a harness to work with the OEM HU if enough people here go bug the OP .
