I had a previous problem with my stock Aisin hubs where the passenger side hubs wouldn’t turn to Lock at all, the drivers side was normal. I took the cover off and a little sprocket was broken. We decided to buy 2 new Aisin hubs and replace both driver and passenger. After installing the passenger side we attempted to lock the hub but it would only go less than 1/4 of the way before stopping and not budging further, somewhat like it was before except that the previous hub required hammering which I’m pretty sure caused the broken sprocket. Again, everything is brand new, so did we maybe install them the wrong way or something?

    Installed incorrectly.

Ensure you assemble everything properly; the dial can go in whether it's right or wrong in regards to being in LOCK and FREE mode.

You need to know if it's in FREE or LOCK and assemble the dial to correspond with the hub itself.

Test this by assembling it outside/off the hub and spinning it by hand before throwing the assembly on the truck.

The hubs were in free when we took it off and the new hubs were in free when we installed them. Is that what you’re talking about?

And also, are you saying I need to take the cover off, turn it, and reinstall it?

I haven't had one apart on a Toyota but guessing they're similar to others, maybe there is some damage to splines:confused:

I’ve read on some other forums and threads about similar problems and they said that it’s pretty much trial and error when fixing them

    When it's in LOCK -

    20200727_184518.jpg

    It shouldn't turn -

    But if it's FREE -

    20200727_184538.jpg

    It should turn -

If you still have your old hubs, rebuild them and keep as a backup set.

It's just about assembling them correctly and knowing the state the hub is in.

I will definitely heed your advice Kwikvette. I’ll take them off and re-assemble them today.
    Thank you!!!

Another thing is you need to make sure your spring is oriented and seated correctly. The smaller gap is towards the dial/cover -

The hubs came pre assembled so all we had to do was take the cover off, bolt the base on, and then reinstall the cover. No parts were moved or disassembled. The only thing that could have moved was the cover and the parts that are attached.

I don’t really know the exact names of the parts so that’s what I mean by the base (in red) . The cover is the only part that we had to take off, as I mentioned before.

The part scribbled in green is the hub dial (silver knob) and cover (black).

The body is the part scribbled in red.

Since you mentioned rebuild kit, where is a good place for those? I recently picked up a 4runner '90

    Never mentioned a kit.

    I've rebuilt several and sourced the parts between 2-3 places;

The gaskets I believe were from Napa, and the o ring and/or ball and detent spring were from one of the "Yota" stores online. Think I got the inner gasket from them too.

I used Sil Glyde from Napa and Redline grease from Amazon.

    Here's one gasket -

Shown on the body, here's another -

The new o -ring and spring...though I only replaced the spring because the old one broke -

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
I have some additional spare parts and part numbers as well.

I will get the part numbers posted later today. I am supposed to
be paying attention at work right now.

Fixed!!! I took the hub apart and it turns out that even thought the dial was set to free, the spring was pressed out as if the hub was locked. All I did was push the spring in back to the free position and reinstalled and viola, the 4wd now works
