For mud and snow there is noting better than a skinny tire. Cuts down to where there is actual traction.

I am running the same lift with spc uca's falken 255/80 on a17x8.5 +0 tires mounted/balanced up fine but did rub on the fender flare and fender liner so i had to have the alignment adjust to fit the lower offset and bigger tire

The difference between the two wheels mentioned will be neglible. I would not expect a CMC to be necessary. Plastic trimming/remolding is probable.

Now that I have 10k miles on my 255/80r17 Toyo AT3 Tires on 4 runner SEMA wheels I figured I'd share my experience.

    Truck specs:
    Bilstein 6112 lift (2.5")
5160 and AAL in rear (level with front)
    SPC UCA
0.75" spacers on the front wheels
Factory alignment specs with high caster (3°)

    On road/daily driving:
Rubbed on mud flaps in the front over driveways/bumps. Also at full lock. Not severe but noticable.

Off road (fast open terrain/small whoops):
No rubbing on front/back after mud flaps removed.
top of tire hit the fender flares and liner on larger hits.

    Tires at full stuff:
LOTS of rubbing for front tires on cab mount, fender flares, fender liners and a little on the metal fender (top and rear of tire)
Rear tires rub a little on fender liner.

    Solution:
Removed fender flares, cab mount chop, aggressive heat molding for fender liner (front liners only), smashed down pinch weld, and very minor trimming of metal fender near cab mounts.

Before CMC trimming at full lock.
(Rear of tire and cab mount area)

Yep, 0.75" so the front track width matches the rear

So those 0.75" spacers you added for looks cost you a ton of work and cutting of your truck?

Some of it was for looks but after the lift the front track width was significantly narrower and the truck wanted to follow the grooves and cracks on the freeway really bad. Alignment was spot on, I increased caster angle and still didn't help.
After the spacers though the truck tracked alot better on the freeway.

It also satisfied my OCD of having the front width match the rear haha

I suspect those who say a true 33" doesn't rub haven't fully stuffed thier tire up in the wheel well.

I suspect that those who have true 33" rub have F'd up the offset :D The reality is you only need enough offset to clear UCA's. Any more than that is for looks alone at the expense of proper fit.

I guess we all have a different opinion on what looks good. No problem there. A true 33 inch tire on factory wheel off set with a 2.5 inch lift will not rub. The biggest problem on the forum is not only do people think they know better than the manufacturer on what a proper offset is, they also think that a wider wheel is better, which also affects offset if you know not what you are doing. I have seen between half a dozen and a dozen Tacos running 285's with 2 inch lifts on stock wheels with no rub at all. Then I have seen a few Tacos with bigger lifts and 9 to 10 inch wide wheels that stick out the fender, which rub with 285's. There are plenty of videos of stock offset, stock height trucks running 285's with no rub.

But I get it if you want a different look.

here is a stocker with 33's.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZDmRXKSI64

here is a lifted truck with outward offset that slightly rubs on 33's. They likely would have had no rub at all if the offset was in just a bit.

Ok that makes sense. I know other guys run the TRD wheels with this size and have no rubbing.

I see what you're saying, I could see how a stock height truck with 285/75/16 doesn't rub on the street with stock wheels and rubs very little off-road

Id have to see it to believe it for 255/80/17 (or 255/85/16) on stock wheels no lift. It was just so darn close when I got my tires installed (pre spacers)

No matter what the wheel specs are it's not going to keep my tires from rubbing on the top of the wheel wells or pinch weld though.
Nothing the BFH mod won't fix haha

I had a 1” lift (2” now) stock rims, and 255/85r16 tires. I had some rubbing when stuffed and turning sharp (while driving off a steep ledge, over a bump at speed, etc) that I solved with an alignment that moved the wheels forward. I have not had any rubbing since. I suspect your spacers might be to blame.

I have not noticed any track width asymmetry nor stability issues like you describe nor does that make any sense to me. Did you measure the track width with a tape measure? I could compare to mine.

In case it’s not already obvious, lift has no effect on rubbing if you fully cycle your suspension.

Are you sure your tires are rubbing the top of the wheel wells? I’ve not heard anyone else report that for a 33” tire. I only hear that when 35” tires are in the mix.

I’ve had the assumption, but haven’t measured it, that there is 1-2” of clearance above the stock tire when stuffed. I have heard testimony that adding a 1” body lift will prevent 35” tires from contacting the top of the fender when stuffed.

I got under my truck today and to check out the rubbing a little closer and cycle the suspension. The tire just touches the top of the wheel well.
I think this is from the bump stops being worn. They are cracked and pretty squishy compared to what I remember on my previous truck.

As for the track width I was about 1.25" narrower in the front than the back after my 3-in lift (which settled to 2.5").
I measured this by placing tape on the ground where the tread contacts the ground on the outside of each tire then move the truck and measured the distance between the tape marks.

    Hi all,
Just read through 26 pages of this forum and my potential set up/scenario was not included so looking for feedback on the following:

Running 255/80/17 falken at3w on Replika TRD wheels (17' dia. 8" wide, offset +5, back space 4.75) on my stock suspension 2021 DCLB sport.

Looking to see if this set up will only rub minorly and can be taken care of by minor cutting and heat molding. Not looking to upgrade UCA's, lift, CMC, etc..

I read through @jdiorio82's amazing write up on page 23 which helped very much but he was running 7" wide SEMA wheels rather than the replika 8" wide wheels.

Just looking to see if anyone has run this combo before I pull the trigger, if not I may have to downsize to 255/75/17 which I would be ok with and would help out MPG.. thoughts????? Thanks

My 255/80/17s rubbed the top of the fender liners. Just used heat gun to mold the bumps flatter and fixed that bit of the rubbing

So, considering the skinny route, with 255/80R17 on Method 703's with a 0 offset. My goal for my Tacoma is to improve ground clearance, breakover angle (the trail limo chose me), maximize suspension travel (within the constraints of coilover/UCA upgrades), and minimize/eliminate rubbing DD and off-road. For this I'm prepared to trade off MPG's and acceleration performance, and minimal plastic trimming. If I have to trim, in more inclined move caster angle forward and trim the front plastic (or do the viper cut mod).

From my lurking of the TW threads, looks like the variables that affect wheel/tire fitment are: wheel offset, tire size, lift, and alignment. Anything else to consider for the skinny life?
