After a 6000 km round trip with nothing indicating anything about to happen, few miles from home, stopped for gas, drove off 100m and boom trans locked up and rear wheels skidded to a stop. I know something internally failed and aware that 6MTs are problematic, but not at 96k km and not like this.. I'm just asking what avenues people took (if any) or link me threads that talked about this...
This would be my 7th Toyota Truck in 30 years, NEVER ever has anything like this happen. Fluids changed, I'm a certified mechanic who mostly works on Asian cars, especially Toyotas, I've heard the 6MT hum at times with customer rigs but never this..

I hope the Powertrain warranty kick in, under in mileage but over in time .. this is nuts

I would find out exactly what "locked up" before you start bashing Toyota. Are you the original owner?

Is it not going into certain gears with the engine off? How’s the rear diff look when you pick it up off the ground and spin the tires - even with the DS disconnected? Will it drive in 4x4 w/o the rear DS connected if it’s 4x4?

Disconnected drive shaft to free-roll up the flatbed... it's at the dealer, let them assess I could care less at this point, it got me home..
it goes into all gears no problem, let off the clutch stalls out without moving an inch..

I put about that many kilometers on my first transmission before it wouldn't stay in 2nd and 3rd gear any more. And didn't even offroad it, ever.

So I definitely feel your frustration.

it is very frustrating, I'm easy on the shifts, waiting little more than I would normally do in other manuals with the so so synchros, never downshifting without a throttle blurb... it's just not a strong transmission by design. I knew that going into it, trading in an 07 with 460k km on the an original A750 automatic that towed 5000+ lbs across the US and Canada never overheating or slipping, but I really wanted a manual! .. Still a great truck, I wish I can fortify the new transmission coming, a T56 is out of the question. I've heard the FJ 6MT is a little better? I like that the FJ has a fraction taller 6th.. with the TCase coversion too

I'm not going let the dealer touch it if it's not covered anymore under powertrain warranty, which I still have 4k km left on it , otherwise I'll tow it to my shop and have at it... just waiting on them to open up after break

Dunno man. 195K miles on my 08 6 speed. No issues other than being clunky/quirky. Never heard of guys blowing up their 6 speeds.

That's odd, I'll be following along out of curiosity simply because I have a 6 speed as well.

Keep us posted! I'm at a little over 125,000 miles on my 2014 with no issues and it still shifts and drives without any concerns. I've kept the fluid changed in mine on at least a 30,000 basis. I've used Royal Purple but my go-to is Lucas.
I'm real curious to see what the problem is with yours.
    Again, please keep us posted.

How do you know the e-brake didn't just lock up
which is exactly what they can do...

So the parking brake is stuck on...

FJ 6th and manual tcase is better

That is a known problem. The shift fork rattles loose over time due to the bolts not coming from factory with blue loctite on them.
There might be a TSB for it.

Would have been a good time to rev it and see if the tailshaft spins with the prop disconnected

If the truck rolled freely with the driveshaft disconnected then it’s not the e brake.

I would guess it was the parking brake as well. Had it happen to me once or twice on my 2012. Wouldn't have believed it if it didnt happen to me.

This fall was the most recent time. Drove at least several hundred yards on slow back roads before the drivers side locked up. Some back and forth and some persuasion with a 24" breaker bar eventually broke it loose.

I've had emergency brake issues with this and past tacoma's in the freezing north, trust me it's not that. I had to unbolt the DShaft at the rear diff to free wheel it. I engaged 4wd just to see if it moves on the front wheel for a inch or two, nothing, engine stalled out quickly. the front wheels rolled freely in 2wd.. when the lock up happened, the 4x4 did blink, so either something let go in the Trans or the T.C., which I didn't engage through out the trip... Dealer is still closed for the holidays, I assume they open tomorrow..

    I'm almost certain they'll say you're on your own, I'm prepared ..

Edit: ran into some interesting and thorough threads about swapping an RC62F ... so tempted, and few low KM units available in Quebec, of course still have to verify the fail, but....
