I’ve seen some adjustable suspension advertised in vehicles lately. I think it will be more of a thing in the >$100k luxury segment, especially “hi-tech” electric trucks. Myself, I prefer having a locker for when I’m going slow and need it, especially steep and slippery conditions. The LSD and ATRAC are both amazing safety technologies, just like anti-lock brakes!

In what way is ATRAC a "safety technology"? Are you perhaps confusing it with TRAC and/or VSC? ATRAC is a different way of improving on the limitations of an open diff. It's disadvantage is that it is reactive. You must have uneven wheel spin before it engages. It's advantages are that it does not mess with steering it is less likely to cause damage to the drivetrain.

I engaged the rear locker once on my old 2005 TRD OR.....just to see if it worked. May want to consider going to something with a limited slip or add one to what you have.... I put a true trac in my son's '97 base model 4x4 4runner that just had an open rear end, night and day difference.... really had no need for 4wd in the snow, it was too much fun in 2wd. So much fun I added one to the rear diff my TRD Sport when I regeared it... That coupled with the TRAC system it is like a belt and suspenders, snowed twice and still have not put it in 4wd....... True Tracs are like 500$ and are there when you need it, unlike lockers which require you to turn on and off, affect your turn radius, etc....... Not against lockers, they do have their advantages, but since you are talking snow and not hard core "wheeling" I figured I would offer up an alternative.

It depends what you call a Grand Cherokee. They can be entry lux. I have seen one of those fail miserably on a roughly 4yr old one. It was a system from the MB days and was costly enough to fix that the owners just traded it off.

Prior to that post above, I didn't know that RAM had adjustable suspension, but know that the ZR2 does. I would specifically avoid it for that reason alone, even more so considering that it is a GM product. I have felt the MagnaRide in a CTSv and intensely disliked the reactive nature of it. Changing feel mid-corner gave me no confidence.

Yes, though. Even with my basic vacuum boosted Taco, the TCS is not very intrusive and works better than any I have previously experienced. Good enough that it is the first vehicle that I have had were I don't automatically turn it off for every drive. It just seems to work right, on road and off.

The majority of OR's have them but some have A-TRAC and some have neither.

    A couple points of clarification...

    1) ATRAC/MTS only comes on ORs and Pros. Sports don't have it.
    2) ATRAC is only available in 4lo.

As someone living in the upper midwest, I'll believe that a 2WD "off-road" truck exists when I see one. lol

I have wondered if they had any off-road traction control on the rear axle and you answered the question. :)

I may have misspoken and I didn't realize this was a 3rd gen thread... I have a 2nd Gen TRD Sport that has Auto LSD/TRAC/VSC... the "limited slip" that uses the wheel speed sensors/brakes ... the True Trac performs well with auto LSD because when used correctly, the true trac requires the driver to gently apply the brakes while hitting the obstacle.... In this case Auto LSD does that.

I live in Tahoe where we get some of the most snow in the county. Just got 6 FEET in town and 11 on the mountains. Never been stuck with just Blizzaks, Altimax Arctics or other "real" snow tires. All terrains don't count. No locker needed. I have a KTM and mountain bike that get me way more places, faster and with more comfort anyways than a Tacoma with locker would in really rough terrain. Also, I'm not excited about beating on the Tacoma. Just take it camping and exploring the Sierras. Manual locking diffs are only good for getting out of deep snow if you're buried. You only get buried normally if you're out screwing around or slide off the road into an unplowed area. Even with 1'+ of new snow on the road before a plow comes, we get around fine in all of our vehicles even a Vibe (Matrix clone) I commute in with just Blizzaks. What's better in the snow is an LSD like a Subaru or auto locker like the Chevy's have. Those are nice and they kick on and off as needed. We never drive around in a fully locked truck like the Tacoma would on plowed roads. The back end would crab walk too much.

Tone…it’s time for ANYTIME!!!! (Although I wholeheartedly agree, the Toyota’s TRAC (ALSD) is top tier.

Eaton E Locker is your next mod! I put it to the big test the other day on gravel/dirt locked in 2WD. From a stop without rolling to engage. (I have no idea who came up with that falsehood!!!) I pushed the TRAC off, I pressed on the CH4x4, and floored it. Yup, HUGE puff of dirt and getting sideways. These lockers engage in a fraction of a second.

    “You’re getting sleeeepy…” :pumpkin:

When you need it, you will be glad you had it - otherwise bust out the traction boards.
