That’s what drum brakes do. That’s why nobody else uses them. Common problem. Are any Tacoma front wheels locking up? No. Or any wrangler rear wheels locking up. No. They have disc brakes

If you have the ability remove your drums and see what's going on. Drums are pretty simple and for the most part reliable. They do require maintenance though. Could be something as simple as a broken spring.

Brake cylinder failure is common too and cause lock up.

Agree with drum brakes being easy. Just open them up and take a look. If there’s brake fluid around the cylinder, it’s needs to be replaced. Chances are you need to do a rear brake job.

Sounds like it’s flexing pulling on the brake cables

To me sounds like your traction control was just doing it’s job. When you turn, you unload the wheel on the inside of the turn. If that wheel starts to break traction, the ECU will momentarily apply the ABS to that wheel’s brake to prevent wheel spin.

This happens in crawl control too ..I reverse and frees the rear brakes..did this a few minutes ago…seems to happen more on a sharp right hand turn..but not always..
In 4 h high …starting to happen very , very often..half a dozen times now from this morning..
Now sure if I should drive it on the highways?

The rear brakes seems to lock at stops sometimes…
I look at all the brake lines …look normal and stock…room for extension when wheel extended..
Next is call the dealer…have them look at the rear brakes..
    Aloha

I did read about this problem of rear brakes locking a year ago…not sure how to find it?
    Aloha

Now it is worst…driving on my dirt road…rear brakes engage automatically…! Now I know I will need a tow to the dealer…calling tomorrow…for sure…

the more I see all the issues of the Tacoma’s trucks…now I wonder just how good they are…off course every other brands have there’s too..

this braking problem? Hope they fix it ?

Guessing when I tested and engage the crawl controls..just yesterday…It might have broken something? Crawl controls only works the brakes and throttle controls…maybe it damage the brakes, springs, or brake cylinder?..

    anyone else had this problem?
    Aloha

    Yes.. 2.5 with 32 inch tires…Bilstein 6112 and 5160 w/icon add-a-lift 1.5…SPC…
I am sure the lift may not be the problem…brake lines look OK…
I did test my crawl control yesterday going down a dirt road…
The problem started soon after that…. The crawl control may have damage something?

Looks like not many others had this problem before? We will see what happens at the Toyota dealer…they are busy , May have to schedule ..hopeful sometime this coming week..
Just that I need a tow…never know when the rear brakes engages…already happening more and more often..driving thru the coffee farm roads.. hopefully it will make it up the hill to the highway..?
    Aloha,

Its not common. Despite some of the shit talkers, drums are relatively reliable. They really are easy to work on once you do it a few times.

So, with all respect, there really can only be so many problems with the brake. It’s just kind of hard to speculate without looking in there.
