Is it possible to turn on the navigation app in my 2022?
There is a button for navigation but it doesn’t work. Any idea what it would cost to activate this?

You would need to have your phone plugged in to apple carplay or the android version in order to use the “navigation”. Sucks, I know.

So I can’t just purchase the maps and turn on the capability?

The navigation option has to be bought with the "premium" trim level, so there's no adding it afterward as far as I know.

The good news - try plugging your phone into the USB port and use Google Maps via Apple CarPlay. If you like that, there are $100 wireless dongles that you can plug into your USB port that will connect to your phone wirelessly every time you get in your truck, allowing you to use CarPlay for navigation, phone, and music by default. That's what I'm planning to do - I spent some time familiarizing myself with CarPlay last week and found that I like it a lot better than the very limited options when I connect my phone via Bluetooth, so I ordered a "CPlay2Air" dongle last week based on positive reviews here.

I think I need to order that dongle.

OEM Toyota nav sucks balls since forever. One of the reasons I didn't pay for Premium Audio or Tech package. I also don't have the ability to remote connect with my truck through Toyota's phone app, but as per usual aftermarket solutions solve that issue.

Going back to specifically off-road navigation, I'd figure GAIA GPS or the On x Offroad app on your phone connected to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto would be better than relying on the OEM Toyota nav.

CPLAY2air wireless adapter for factory CarPlay on CARPLAY2air.com – CPLAY2air.com

Mine should be arriving any day, so I can't provide my own review yet. Here's the thread that inspired me to go for it: Success: Wireless CarPlay with 2020 Tacoma OEM head unit | Tacoma World

I plan to use 3M Dual Lock tape (basically Velcro) to mount it in roughly the same spot as the OP in that thread, and a short USB cable with a 90-degree head should provide a little cleaner look sticking out of the dash.
