Do the 2001 v6 4x4 trans have dipsticks

Pretty sure I’ve been leaking trans fluid right above my starter, I never noticed a dipstick but everyone’s mentioning them, also seen it belongs above my starter. is it a automatic thing or on manuals too? Pretty sure it’s where this trans fluid is getting out, not sure how long it’s been missing if it is. Any clear picture to where it should be in engine bay would help, also any confirmation that it’s missing would be appreciated too

 

I don’t recall a Transmission dip stick on my 04 OR 4x4. 01-04 was generally the same. The last vehicle I had one on was a ‘93 civic. Most manufacturers have gone away from them.

 

While I have a few experts on the thread, I’m seeing mixed reviews on which fluid to put in my trans the auto store told me I should use dex3 atf but everywhere else they are filling it with the same

75w-90 as the diffs, does it matter depending on auto or manual?

 

I never noticed it befor and never thought anything of it until reading these posts of so many people claiming they did I shined as much light into the area above my starter and didn’t see anywhere I could put the stick into

 

Wait do you have a manual trans or an auto?

Auto use ATF fluid, manuals use gear oil 75w90.

Do not put gear oil in an auto trans or ATF in a manual trans.

The autos should have dipsticks, the manual transmissions do not.

To check the fluid level of the manual trans, you just crack open the fill plug on the transmission. If it starts to dribble out then it's full. If not, then top it off.

Auto trannies are much more sensitive to fluid level and overheating than manuals are. Which is why autos have dipsticks and temp sensors and manuals do not.

 

What color is the leaking fluid you're seeing? Is it more watery or does it look/smell like oil

 

Thank you for clearing that up I have a manual and I was right from the start and these automatic guys confused the shit out of me. Also gotta give a strong applause to the OReilly guy for tryna kill my trans. Lol

 

The fluid almost looks like oil but I believe it started spreading after I changed my starter so I’m going to try and tighten the bolts on it now

 

I know oil wouldn’t come from the trans so my and my buddys guess was trans fluid , which he said would also be a long shot considering the the starter doesn’t have a direct connection to any trans fluid

 

Yeah don't ever take those part store worker's advice for gospel ... Most times they don't know an air filter from an oil filter and just rely on what their system tells them, which entirely depends on their ability to input the correct info into the system in the first place.

 

Your manual transmission has a filler plug. Remove it and check the oil level with your finger, seriously. Then read the owner's manual for the proper oil if you need it.

 

Yea I’ve located the filler and drain, the reason I started doing so much research and doubting myself because my fillers on the driver side and drains on the passenger side of the trans, and everyone else’s video of the drain on the bottom thru me off even tho I’m aware there’s a few types of trans I never saw my specific one. I got the

75w-90 I’m probably gonna do the drain tomorrow then try and do another in a few months and use a better quality 75w-90 to hold me down another 100k or so

When you do the drain & fill, make sure you open the fill plug first. You don't want to drain it only to find out that the fill plug is seized on or stripped.

 

I know to do the top first, I just did my front and rear diff. Thank you tho definitely

 

Not sure about 01 and 02 but 03 and 04 have the transmission dipstick. If you have it it'll be here (orange plug) on the passenger side

 

He’s got a manual transmission, there’s no dipstick.

 

And I am an idiot who can't read OP's vehicle specs
