Sometimes in my 3rd gen when i am turning at low speeds i get a vibration like im hitting rumble strips. I also get it at low speeds driving straight. My truck has 150k miles and it is a OR access cab with a 2" spacer lift. I put that lift on at around 30k and never had these vibrations until recently. I have been reading that it could be a needle bearing but i feel like it coming from passenger side soemtimes as well?

Few questions so we can maybe narrow it down:

Does the sound change when you turn the wheel? Or is it pretty consistent if straight or turning?

Also, any difference if you switch from 2WD to 4WD? I recall this being indicative of the needle bearing issue

And do you feel it more in the floor or the steering wheel?

Sound is pretty consistent going straight or turning. And what do you mean by switching to 4wd? Isnt it bad to switch to 4wd while in motion? And yes i feel it more in my floor.

You’re right that it’s always best to do it at a stop. I didn’t necessarily mean to do it while in motion (although it’s fine at lower speeds). I was curious if the sound comes or goes, depending on whether or not you were in 2 or 4WD. Cuz without reading the old threads, I think the needle bearing on the driver side of the front diff will be evident with that little experiment.

I once had a vibration through my feet/floor that ended up being a poorly balanced wheel. Rotating the tires and seeing if things change is always a cheap and easy first step with vibes like this

Don’t dig too deep into it without checking the basics. Check suspension for any worn parts and check the tires. Is there any abnormal wear on the tires? Are the tires old? What brand?

Good point! And tires i had on before were bfg ko2 265 75 still had vibration. Just got 285 wild peaks this week and im still having this same rumble. The previous tires were scalloped bad so i thought that was the reason why.

Yup, no issues with that. In fact I do it every few weeks in the summer just to keep the gear moving a little bit, if I’m not on trails for a while.

If it changes with that experiment, dig deeper into the needle bearing issue and ECGS solution.

Id also get under there and shake your driveshaft ends to check for ujoint issues or carrier bearing play. Again, nice easy stuff to check for free first :)

    Yes, without making turns.

If the noise goes away, relatively easy fix.

Shifting between 2H and 4H can be done at any speed below 62mph. It’s right in the manual. No need to be stopped and moving slowly. 4L is a different story.

Here’s a handy thread where someone else just diagnosed the needle bearing issue. And if that ends up being your problem, there are some good threads on here about how to do the job. Once you source the bushing from ECGS. You could probably buy or borrow a used removal tool from someone on here to save from buying a new one.

Let us know how the experiment goes! If not that, then we’ll keep helping ya dig

Thanks for sharing that. It’s definitely how I’ve done it over the years, but good to see I wasn’t actually abusing it, and it was per the manual.

Only caveat Id make is that the older my truck has gotten, the less smooth it is at speed (especially when very cold)
