Just to keep those who are driving into Death Valley aware of the gas prices. This is at Furnace Creek this past weekend.Furnace Creek fuel prices.jpg

Fuel at Stovepipe is a little less but I try and fill up in Bishop or Beatty when entering or leaving and carry an extra 10 gallons.

For the person who asked if they should bring a 5 gallon Jerry can with gas to Death Valley, This is a good reason to carry a 5 gallon ,preferable pre filled, Jerry can when visiting Death Valley

Yeah especially because Stovepipe can be shut down due to winds, some guy in a jeep was stranded and had to bum my fuel can off me to get to the next station.

Did you charge him $8/gallon plus a $75 convenience fee? lol. Sorry, sometimes it feels like that in DV.

That is a really great shot! Hope to see one someday outside of a museum... even from afar.

How far did you go into the adit? And what shape is it in? Appears to be a hard-rock mine?

I see two sets of switchbacks going up the mine -- did you take the trail which starts upcanyon from the burned cabin?

Found this info on the location:

Post this in the nor-cal forum. The spotted/bs forum is pretty active so I'd recommend trying there. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/norcal-spotted-and-bs-thread.53517/page-8473

The entire site is in reasonable good shape (mining wise) at first glance, but has been significantly vandalized over the last 10 years, which is part of why I've redacted the names in my write-up. Several artifacts (in addition to the burned cabin that I noted) have been both stolen and destroyed according to folks who know more than I do of the (recent) history.

I went reasonably far into the adit; to a point where there'd been a collapse, and passage was possible but difficult without a real flashlight (which I wasn't carrying at the time).

    - - -

And here's part 2 of the trip - a couple of well-known places that I don't mind mentioning the names of - Panamint Dunes (my first time hiking them) and then Trona (both the town and Pinnacles)

    ... at the top.

... note the good folks below me to the left, and then go read the story of our little "race."

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

We're headed there this weekend. Looking at driving out of the park over Cerro Gordo road, west, into Keeler. Any chance you know if there is any snow at the higher elevations coming that way?

2 weeks ago, the snow level was 6500' (or so) where it became impassable. The ridge above Cerro Gordo is at 8200'. I wasn't there, but I'd venture to guess that it's got quite a bit of snow.

Here's a photo of the Inyos from my trip.

And the White Mountains, a little further north. Elevation, similar.

Apparently I took snow photos when I had the tent open, hahaha.

Thanks for the feed back

I'll definitely be looking at the peaks along our trip before I commit. That would be our last day of our 5 day trip. And I would be breaking off solo to do that leg.

I'll carefully weigh my options for sure.

The wasn't any snow where I was, but I can't speak for Cerro Gordo.

I look at the Whites everyday from about 15 miles away. It's been very warm the last 3 weeks. We had solid coverage over 10000'. Now we don't. You'll be fine.
