How do you like your Automatic?

At 60mph the rpm’s are to low to hold 5th gear so it jumps back and forth every 5 seconds. I’ll video it next time I’m out.

 

CVT would at least hold the rpm’s at the right power output lol

Again, I disagree. I have been using it a lot and it makes a huge difference on long hills as well. I have not tried it on cruise control. But maybe it varied from vehicle to vehicle.

 

It might make a difference that I am between 6500 and 11000 feet 100% of the time, but I have noticed no difference at all when using it with cruise on. Doesn't hold the lower gears any longer. Just downshifting and upshifting endlessly until it can start holding 4th and 5th then it starts to calm down. ETC or not. Every time it downshifts to 3rd it will upshift all the way to 6th when it gets back up to set speed before repeating the whole routine. In sport mode it will disable cruise when you shift into 3rd manually. Basically no cruise for me, most of the time unless I want to watch my transmission try to commit suicide.

 

I think we live in the same place. I can cruise all the way from Genesee to the Eisenhower Tunnel and with ect it stays in gear in most circumstances. It still jumps, but not as much as other vehicles I have owned. In fact it does better on the east bound side climb to Eisenhower than my old 2005 F150 with the 5.4 triton V8.

 

I'm Durango to Ouray. 60-65mph. Not a lot of stretches long enough to use cruise but it would still be nice. And again endless shifting etc or not. Maybe I will shoot a video next time I go over 550. I'm interested on you using cruise, see what you think. Subaru (cvt) Tundra (4.7) Tundra (5.7) F350 (7.3 6 speed) 2015 Tacoma (AT) 2009 Tacoma (AT) and 2016 F250 (6.2) on the same road, same conditions all found a happy gear. My 22 just makes bad life choices.

 

Had my 21 OR for about 2 weeks now and since switching from driving a 6-speed MT Crosstrek in the city all day, I really cant complain about the AT in my truck. I can't lie that sometimes the trans seems a little confused on where to be, but it isnt anything that is a dealbreaker(at least for me). If I didnt commute all day for work, probably would've splurged for the manual. But 2k miles later on the automatic, and I have no issues with standard driving.

 

Happy with mine also. Perfectly stock. Maybe they’re not all the same? If it ain’t broke...

 

It's OK, however I got a lesson on trailer pulling yesterday. I was pulling 1100lb box trailer in a 20mph slight angled head wind with etc on and in S mode it couldn't hold 65 mph in 4th gear had to drop to 3rd got a whopping 5mpg on the way back loaded with approximately 1000 extra lbs. filled with premium wind switched to a side wind I got 11mpg 4th gear with no hunting for a gear. Normally I can count on 20 mpg not loaded, this winter has been brutal high winds even empty I'm lucky to get 15mpg and not run in auto. 4th or 5th gear against 25 to 40 mile an hr winds, forget being out of S mode and this truck hasn't had the shifting issues my 16 &19 did. But it does better with premium. It also got 12 mpg pulling 2100 lbs.

 

I do Pagosa to Durango a lot, before a tune my 20 Tacoma shifted all the time, now it is a lot better only going into third over Yellowjacket, using 5th a lot. But on another point my 2006 GX470 shifted just as much doing that trip and my girlfriend GX460 is so much smoother, changing gears only on steep grades and getting better MPG.

 

Maybe I am confused, but what is the issue here? Because everything makes sense to me. S5 isn't the gear you are in, it limits the highest gear the tranny will shift to.

 

Yeah, I will definitely try cruise with ECT next time.

 

Did you ever get TSB 0062-18 done?

I ask because:

This sounds exactly like my truck pre TSB. After the TSB there is very little difference between ECT on or off for my truck. Pre TSB the difference was quite noticeable.

 

I've had two 2021 Tacomas. First was a Sport DCLB automatic, current is an Offroad DCSB automatic. Both have been nice trucks. Both were OV tuned by my buddy @tonered. Both also had 1 size bigger tire/wheel package Sport (265-70R17), Offroad (265-75R16). Around town driving was/is great with the OV tune. Before the tune it was sooo annoying, neither truck could decide what gear to be in, constantly hunting. Now with that being said, I am truck driver so I naturally lean towards rowing my own gears(I feel more "in control" of the vehicle). On the highway I really can't stand it anymore. Any slight hill, or gust of wind 6th 5th 6th 5th 4th 5th 6th. I'm done with it. So I have this on order. With the way the used truck market is, I was able to get the difference down to $2300.

 

No not yet, but I wonder if post TSB, the truck runs like shit all the time There should be a noticeable difference between ECT and non.

 

Other than the fact that my automatic keeps downshifting when going uphill and doesn’t like to stay in 4th gear on flat street roads, it’s all good.

 

Most cars don't stay in gear on flat road until you begin to accelerate. And all downshift when going uphill, unless you have a torquey turbo diesel.

 

I honestly don't miss owning a standard, and the auto has been fine. Love my Taliban Tan "automatic"

 

No lol. The truck runs like it is ECT all the time post tune (well, like 85% ECT anyways). ECT still makes a difference, but it's much smaller now. The TSB really makes a world of difference.

Probably the single best improvement made since I bought my truck in Dec of '16. I highly recommend it.
