You do you man, we are just throwing out alternate solutions you may not have thought of. Ones that dont require drilling holes and running wires :notsure:

If you do go this route, you can add a front receiver too. Then you'll have actual winching in either direction - and for more than just the kayak.
Use Anderson plugs for the power coming off the battery in the front; then have the mates on the winch itself and on an extension cord (HD jumper cables) long enough to reach the rear.

If you think you'll ever winch the truck up a hill -or- if you know you'll never pull more than 1,000 pounds with it; chose your front receiver accordingly.

Another thing of note is that it is possible to install a front bed rail which you could mount a pulley or ultra-light winch to.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/front-bed-rail.456077/

I’m not positive this would be strong enough as I’ve never done anything like you have, but I have used the bed rails multiple times to tie down furniture and dirt bikes. In all those cases I was using multiple attachment points. I think the Toyota rates each rail at 200 lbs. it’s in the manual.

Why not go the other route and just add a snorkel to the truck and drive it down into the water. Would make loading the kayak easier as well, floating it into the bed. Snorkel and some breathers and your golden.

OP, can you pull a rope standing still half the weight of the kayak plus whatever dragging friction you encounter? If so, check out a 2:1 pulley system. Run a chain between two d-rings in the front bed bolts. Attach the rope and pulleys like the illustration to the chain. Attach the lightest possible pull chain to the kayak. From the moving pulley, attach a rope with a hook hooked onto the pull chain. Pull the kayak out till you use up the rope, detach the hook on the pull chain and let the rope back out, reattach the hook and pull some more. Lather, rinse, repeat til you get the kayak to the boat.

Thats a custom made one. No one really makes them for our trucks as there is little market, but just enough of a market you can get universal ones like this that people use for pulling ATVs or dead animals up a ramp.

That is a pretty darn good option right there. Its a little pricey though.

Did some research and found i could assemble one of those with some aluminum extrusion and a few angle joints at about 1/5 the cost.

Should be easy enough to mount a winch to it.

Oh for sure you can make your own with available premade parts for much cheaper. Thats how I feel about 99% of the bed bars that companies on here sell for $500+. Take these bed bars for example. They sell for $525.00 plus shipping. Its premade extrusion thats cut to length, then 4 sheets of metal bent 2 times each on a break. There is no engineering or design that warrants that price. I made my bed bars for for $60 (they are steel)

This would be awesome for loading (light) motorcycles and probably safer than running them up on the clutch

Did you make those sheet metal mounts, or source them somewhere?

Those are premade by billy bars for $525. Here are the ones I made for $60. The rack is a yakima skinny warrior knock off, and the ski rack is also a yakima knock off.

Why not just use good old blue steel (California truck rope)? It’s amazing what can be accomplished with a long length of line, no need to drag it behind you, just haul it up with your arms. You can utilize a bed cleat to assist you as well.
