3rz rebuild done!

After a year in the making, I finally finished my 3rz rebuild. I replaced every part and sensors with the OEM equivalent. It was pricey, but well worth it, IMO.





The head gasket failed here, and instead of doing a head job, I decided to rebuild.



Cleaned up, with all new parts!


I replaced the oil pump cover screws with Allen bolts. Looks better and easier to remove in the future.


Ready to install!

After priming the system it started up strong! The best thing is, no check engine light!

The engine was the last item I rebuilt on the truck. Everything mechanical has been rebuilt now. It’s like a brand new truck with a shity paint job! But hey, it’s my adventure truck!

I wish I could find a 3rz for my 99 to start building really wanna do a turbo build.

Good move placing the oil pump cover screws. I had to drill out almost all of them when replacing my Dad's timing chain on his 95.5 3RZ. It had around 160,000 and the chain got loud. I know that's the exception, but it happened.

 

Nice work, I've never rebuilt a Japanese motor, but I've done 3 V8 engines over the years. I wouldn't worry too much about the paint job, if this is strictly an off road adventure truck. With all the work you've done, it should be a very reliable and dependable truck for years to come.

I had some trouble with those screws as well! Probably won’t have to take the oil pump off again, but it will make it easier.

Maybe a DIY Monstaliner refinish is in your future? Not for glam as much as for a bit of sheetmetal weather protection.

 

Not to hijack this post, but him working on his Tacoma reminded me of this.

I wish I had some pics of my 1974 Ford F100 with a straight 6, that we did a half rebuild on back in 1983. It was a rough looking truck with dents everywhere. but after doing the engine work, it ran like a scalded dog.

 

Not to be nosey but can I ask how much this set you back?

After looking at those pics of the rebuilt engine again, that motor is really clean looking, nice job.

 

Around $2,000, maybe a little more. I got all the parts wholesale.
