No, and there should be a pretty thick gasket sandwiched between there too

Eh NE has the ability to mess with a lot of stuff we don't see out this way. Super quick to rule out however. Same w/ the flex plate. Not too much trouble to rule out accessory belt / pulley / bearing noise with removing accessory belts and running the engine for a bit (can't hear anything besides the engine at high idle on my speakers).

Here's the method I was using to chase down a high idle (apparently these things won't idle with the AFR unplugged, but went through the whole thing even though that was the problem).

You can check a cold system with soapy water too.
Just like a tire, spray it and watch for bubbles.

Some shops use compressed air in the tail pipe.
But that’s not too convenient for most DIYer’s.

If you don't already have a scanner - even a bluetooth one that uses your phone's processing ability I'd look into getting an affordable one - sometimes it's what's needed to cancel out certain things quickly.

I have wanted one for some time now. There are a couple that have been suggested on here. I started doing research on them & others. Put in "scanner" = crapload of options. Put in "real time (or whatever it is) scanner" = still a crapload of options.... :notsure:
My cel very rarely goes on. Even when it should, it does not, so I don't necessarily feel the need for an OBDII type.

Anyway, I thank you all & will follow up on said suggestions after I get a little sleep....

Can filter by "North America" if you like

I've used this version for years (the 327 V2.1): https://www.ebay.com/itm/274929907889?LH_BIN=1

So I noticed those said Android and when I added “iPhone” to the search, the results started to list WiFi versions of the it. The price also went up a few dollars.

What type of phone are you using the with? Seems perhaps they can’t make a Bluetooth compatible version for iPhone. What software are you running with them? The WIFI is a little lame, but for the cost I didn’t mind dealing with it. That’s why I don’t completely recommend it, but can’t justify buying a nicer legit Bluetooth one compatible with iPhone since it’s been doing everything I’ve needed (minus TPMS) so far. One day I’ll get a nicer one eventually.

So far it seems like with the one I linked you’re paying a convenience fee for prime shipping vs. direct from China.

I have an iPhone se older model, software 14.8.1. It’s bugging me to do the next update. I like the smaller phones cuz I can put them in my pocket. Got it off dclutter on eBay 3 years ago for 100.00. Doesn’t owe me a dime back, that’s for sure.

So here’s the confusion. Bear in mind I only opened the first link. If there are no codes to scan, then how do these help? I did look into the trip scanner (think that’s correct), but it seemed like an awful lot of money to pay considering how the (can’t think of the word) options? amount of sensors? it monitored narrowed down given the year if the truck even though I have OBD2.

For chasing high idle it allows you to check throttle position and rule out a stuck open throttle body for starters. Yeah I wouldn't pay a lot of money - I'm around $35 all in for the past 5 years on my scanner.

I thought I read through the whole thread. But I didn't see a mention.

Is the ticking constant? Or only when cold? Or on hot restarts?

I had that IAC related code I posted earlier in this thread. I disconnected the battery for a bit. Then I unplugged the IAC & ran the truck. The cel came back on. Wash, rinse, repeat, except added in disconnecting the air assist & reconnected the IAC. With both hose & IAC disconnected, the cel did not come back on. Reconnected both & it still stayed off & has not returned. The hose was securely on because I had to fight with it to remove. So I did not change a darn thing. No changes in how the truck runs.
I did swap out a faulty IAC about a year ago. Idle was low. Stuck closed. No code. Swapped it. Ran ok for a bit, but certainly didn't resolve it feeling off.
My VPS has been messed up for years. From time to time I would throw code. Last one I had was in June right after I did the engine, gaskets, injectors. Then, poof!, it was gone. Sensor is still malfunctioning. Every time I put one in it makes itself a two way.
My PS pump power assist? (connects into the bottom of the pump) connector was shot. I didn't notice. I did notice the light came on after I changed out the pump. Stayed on about a day & then went out.
Maybe I'm tellin' y'all stories you know all too well & maybe I just dont fully understand how the cel works. All's I'm sayin' is sure, in the moment (or even shortly after as I know they get stored) if I happen to get a code, that's great to be able to read it. However, as in the case of the evap sensor, ????

& someone @TnShooter ? posted something about this engine issue (the one I started the thread about) coming on quickly. The "tick"/rap, not sure what to call it except it's different from the typical Tacoma tick, is what hooked me so that was new. The off & on idle problems are not new. I've been doing all this good stuff to address it, plus just stuff that should have been done anyway. It will improve it for a bit & then some roughness, high, low, loping, whatever, returns or starts up.

Ok. So you can check stuff even if you cel is not on or has not recently been on?

Again, the irony of having listened to this over & over, made vids with & without (obviously those would be cold) belts, with & without stethoscope, under the truck, top o' the truck.... Definitely cold start. I still hear it after it "idles down". When you say "hot start", I presume you mean I'm doing errands around town kinda thing.... Now that I think about it, the first couple of vids I made were with it hot. I think I know where you're going with this. I am beginning to suspect a manifold type leak as at least part of the problem. Another member mentioned exhaust leak. I didn't consider it too much at the time because I pictured it as I'd be roaring down the road with a massive trail of gray stinky smoke. Doesn't necessarily have to be the case....

Anyway, I'm going to shut up & suit up. Try & ignore the freakin brake line & see if I can determine if there's any merit to the leak possibility.

Ya no experience with iPhone, but they've always worked on my Androids.
You can just filter by "North America" and think I saw one for 8 bucks (the cheaper blue ones probably work just as well though). Use with Torque Free or Torque Pro

Not a phone thing, I bought the Ultragauge. Love it..$60 well spent. I leave the main screen on my fuel MPG and voltage but you can change it up as you wish, plus scan for current and pending CELs. Doesn't need a phone/sub/etc, just plug into the OBDII. I velcroed it to my steering column from there.

So my son held a wet cloth to the tailpipe & the two PITB flanges at the converters are leaking. Guess I need to figure out a permanent solution to those. However I am not convinced those are bad enough to cause this. I also checked the upper flanges. Seemed ok.
Then it got too hot for him to keep the rag there.
I sprayed some brake fluid at this area & it bubbled, but the engine was hot by then. Would it bubble if it was hot? & the idle did not change.
Hold on. Going to post a pic. It’s just I typed this on the phone & then decided to use my regular camera to take the pic.

Looks black-ish there & like not such a great place to have an issue. & that is my stowaway rock.
    P2620657.jpg

Also somewhat unrelated, what's up with those vlave cover bolts? I just did those in June. Felpro. Torqued to spec. 53in lbs. Or maybe this is related if there is a leak right below it....
