How big of a ride did the dealer take my wife on.

Even more annoyed now as I went out to check their work. The one thing we asked them to do besides the oil change was top off power steering fluid as it made a small squeal yesterday when making a full 180 turn. They definitely didn't do that as it is low

Does this side vents have anything to do with AC? They did spray something in the middle vents but outside vents are full of leaves. At least they did change the two filters

I wouldn't say i'd never go back to the one here as their very good, just that its a 45 minute drive for me, and not cheap. I can do a simple oil change, and other minor maintenance, then its another 15 minutes to the recycling ctr. to dump the waste oil. I even have a buddy with an independent garage that employs a few tech's, but i've taken my stuff there before...can't trust most of them to do a proper job either. Last time there, they left the vacuum lines off when they replaced spark plugs.

Dude. Your totally fucked. You described this was done for convenience, first to the dealer, then for the errands. Then you shot the messenger who is also your wife. Tell her you are sorry and appreciate she did the errand you have thought it through and with inflation and everything you were just having sticker shock.

She’ll probably be so amazed at your reversal and caring attitude that she’ll jump you bones on the kitchen table.

IMO Toyota mechanics are normally better than most. The service writers can be buttholes though. Just have to sort threw their bs. Now the oil change techs are a different story. That is where they are sorted out.

Service departments are the only thing keeping these dealerships going in this economy with a shortage of new cars to sell. They take advantage of people because they can. It is not your wife’s fault. I always give my wife instructions to call me before she has the service department work on anything other than what I asked her to have done.

Normally, they recommend a whole bunch of costly simple services that I can do at home for a fraction of what they charge. Things like cleaning battery terminals for $45.00, replacing the engine air filter for $75.00, etc. Unfortunately, that’s how they make easy money in this economy.

Good idea. And they tell you to pour anti freeze in the ground. That will kill you. I don't get it.

This is what dealerships do….up sale parts and service. You sent a lamb into the lions den and expected good results?

I was having some recall work done on my truck (DEF tank heater) and all of a sudden I received an email with 1650.00 worth of maintenance items that needed to be done immediately. Now I don’t claim to be an ASE certified mechanic, but I do my own servicing.
When I got back to the dealership I went to work. Pulled dipstick on Allison trans. Well what do you know…perfect color and not “burnt”. I asked if they had an oil analysis testing facility on-site and how the fuck they knew my transmission fluid was in need of changing? I had just did the second drain and fill at 60k mikes with the proper fluid (which GM uses Dextron…not great). Next up was differentials and transfer case. I pretty much embarrassed all the service advisors in 20 min and ask to put in my service file that I’m an asshole…and this asshole is going to put you on the spot every time. I don’t mind spending money for service, just not on unnecessary service.

I would get off work early, go to the market and get her favorite food. Then go home cook her a meal like your relationship is on the line. Don’t bring flowers (women hate apologizing with flowers if you didn’t know), open a fine bottle of wine, apologize like a real man and thank her for taking the time out of her busy schedule to take the truck in for service. Make sure you have desert and then ask….

Sorry but that’s on you. Unless you told your wife to NOT get any additional services.

It could be a lot worse, you could’ve driven four miles, emptied your entire oil pan onto the underside of your truck, and be currently participating in long term negotiations over whether or not you get a new engine.

Reading through the replies and getting a good laugh. Funny how this thread turned into a men's support group offering relationship advice.

OP it is funny, but they are right.

Does the dealer know you have a boat? The dealer presumably thought you could afford the premium service, and why would your Wife object?

Has your Wife suggested selling the boat yet, so you can pay for the premium service?

He's definitely got to make this right with his wife--we are here to support one another, right? lol

And yes, at least his oil pan bolt/oil filter housing were tightened and did not empty 4 miles into a drive as someone mentioned from another thread.

Try and take the best out of this situation and press on...lesson learned. Hopefully, your wife forgives you.

The argument of doing oil changes yourself or taking it to a dealer or somewhere else is moot. This could have happened anywhere the truck was taken to.

Ultimately, it's your responsibility to have communicated effectively. If you would have done it a certain way or expected someone (dealer or your wife) to call you, then communicate as such. People aren't mind readers, she probably thought she was doing the right thing and helping you out and you just shit on her because you're mad at the dealer for doing what they do. Sounds like a dick thing to do IMO. Next time she'll probably not want to help.

10-4 on that you take your ride in and turn it over to a boy that doesn’t know shit from shinola. Same goes for jiffy lube, Malwart, or any of the quickly places. I love changing my own oil so I have 100% control over the process. I buy at a discount from Costco the Kirkland brand 10 quarts for about 36 dollars the filters come via Amazon from a Toyota dealer in Florida. I end up with synthetic premium quality oil and a great factory filter @ about 44 bucks all in.
Peace of mind my brother. The day may come when I’m unable to perform this basic function but when it does I’ve got an independent shop that’s three guys all factory trained who struck out on their own and they ain’t kids no more.

dealership???? Fuck no avoid them like covid. Buy your old lady a steak dinner and apologize because you screwed up.
