Yeah I tend to acquire parts. The Woodward joint though may be needed to make a custom steering shaft to go to a steering box down the road.

Will see. I have an extra steering shaft to mess with. I do like the Woodward joint since it’s designed as is. Not sure how janky that other unlint would be. Mind you shouldn’t be that much force on the joint. I don’t know. Don’t have to worry about it now.

So it’s almost been a year now since I put in a brand new rack and new pump. I went with an oem rack and bbb industries pump. I’m pretty much back to square one with similar issues. No leaks as of now, but the steering feels like it’s binding. Go to turn to lock and it just stops way before lock on either side. And when you force the binding there is some unhappy noises. I have replaced the steering shaft and when the wheels are off the ground I have no binding which leads me to believe it’s the power steering again.

Based on what I have found in asking around and some research I believe I didn’t clean the system out prior too (didn’t replace the lines or reservoir and didn’t install a filter) and now have contamination blocking a valve or something in the rack or pump.

I currently flushed the system with two quarts of atf and nothing changed. Before I go and replace absolutely every part of the system (lines, reservoir, pump and rack) and also add a filter and cooler, does anyone have any suggestions or insight. Planning on replacing with bbb industries pump and rack from rock auto and new lines and reservoir from doorman or comparable.

if you lift the truck and turn the wheels lock to lock engine off is everything moving smothly and dose the wheels reach lock to lock.
what I'm getting at is that is it possible the rack in not moving mechanically enough to reach lock to lock..

When wheels are off the ground everything is perfect. I am getting some weird flow I’m the reservoir where it will be at the right level but as you go lock to lock it will overflow the off time. It’s very inconsistent. Again only with the wheels off the ground. Because it only works off the ground it leads me to believe it’s a flow stoppage due to contamination and flow is restricted when needed.

sounds like what we call poppet valves in bus steering systems. after a certain pressure is reached, and that being at the locked position the steering box will unload pressure so your not putting 2500psi on the steering stops,

I wonder if these work in the same way where pressure is dumped after the steering hits the steering stop.

if it dose that means the "thing" in the pump usually a spring and ball is revealing pressure prematurely b4 the steering reaches the steering stop.

I say try a pump b4 anything elso

oh and btw for some reason I don't believe there is debris or dirt in the system causing this.

absolutely. I have my original rack that I have taken apart and there does seem to be tiny little valves to control flow in there as well. Assuming the pump is the same or it could blow the seals in the rack.

My concern is if I do replace the pump, the new pump could get contaminated and I’ll be back to square one. The pump would definitely be easier to replace though. When I spoke to Naaz at the Ardbeg meet he was saying it was the rack and debris. Why I am here asking away.

I’ll see what the shipping difference on getting a pump without the rack. I’ll do the filter and cooler and worse case the filter will block the debris saving the pump if it is the rack. Do a bit more research and make sure.

I’ll have to grab a picture of some of the holes in the rack for pressure and flow. It wouldn’t take much for debris to get caught. Crazy how they figure all this out.

worst case senerio which would take some time an fittings is to install an inline pressure guage and see when it stops turning how much pressure is in the line. if there is pressure the rack is binding if there is no presssure maybe the pump is giving it all up.. just a thought

as for debris is suspended in liquid and my thinking is it would lodge and dislodge its self so this would be a intermittent problem but the problem exists all the time. good luck with it..

Yeah the intermittent part is definitely accurate. I drove the truck no issues and then boom, binding. I haven’t tried to drive the truck since. Pressure gauge is an interesting idea. I can hear the pump whining (same whine if you try and continue turning when you reached the steering stop) which leads me to believe the pumps fine. My concern is contamination is in the system and I can’t get it all out. This is what is leading me to replace everything and be done with it. It’s been annoying to say the least.

Today I decided to finally get around to fixing my issue. Have all the parts ordered and ready to go. Was taking a toe measurement in order to match my alignment after the new rack. Noticed the front diff was locked…..super weird. Checked the locker, it was off, and checked everything. Why is the air locker engaged. Undo the hose into the electronic valve and a bunch of air comes out. My binding steering was a binding front end. The blow off valve filter was clogged which caused all the issues. Spare rack, pump and lines for now I guess.

Installed a few things since I didn’t have to replace the rack.

installed a catch can. Had some gift cards so thought what the hell. At this point, there isn’t much I can get for $50 for the truck nowadays lol.

Just made up a bracket using some aluminum.

also installed the power steering cooler and filter. Figured these couldn’t hurt anything. Will make sure it’s not obstructing line pressure on the return but I can’t imagine it doing so.

Again, brackets are out of some aluminum. I used rivnuts in the rad support to not have to mess around with nuts and washers. Just makes it easy if it ever needs to come out.

also forgot, I welded in the new gussets. Swapped in the one side already and will do the other side to have matching new ones.
