1st gen tacoma with rock crawler rims

ive decided to get the steel black rims from wheelersoffroad.com

 

Yeah I called 4wheelparts also and they're saying that the only way I can run 16x8s is with a 3.75 backspace and some old-school procomp steel wheels. I'm looking at a different set of procomp steels that are 16x8 with 4" backspacing. Will these not fit?
or does 4wheelparts not know what they're talking about. I'm wanting to order these tonight but I'm not going to unless I know for sure they'll fit. Thanks

I have Pro Comp Series 52 15" steelies that came with the truck when I bought it. They need to have a tiny spacer, and I believe it's still using the stock lug studs.

It's just barely too close to the caliper...just a 1 or 2 mm spacer would do.

 

Thanks for the help. So would I do a wheel spacer or what? They said something about because I have a 99' the lugs are smaller or something. I just need to know what I need to do to make it fit and what backspacing I really need.

 

i ran a set of those wheels before with a 4.25" backspace in 16x8... back between 2002 to 2004 there were too many first gens running that wheel so i stepped it up to the streetlock... 4wp guys kept saying there was no way i was clearing them without wheel spacers... haha

 

i would try for a 4" backspace so that you have some room later to fit 33s...

you can always order one wheel to test fit, and if it works, then get the other 3... if for some reason it doesn't, return it and take the restock fee in the piehole...

OR, just do the alloys from Wheelers and call it a day...

 

Haha so its pretty much a hit or miss. And I'm thinking about just getting the wheels from wheelers even though I live within an hour of the closest 4wp store in Tampa lol. and I'm getting tires from 4wp for a decent deal. I'm just trying to save some $ by ordering it all from them so they can mount it and everything.

 

i hear ya on the package deal...

try some of the small mom and pop tire shops too... sometimes, they have better tire deals...

i remember when i first switched to Cooper STTs... all the major retailers were asking for $850 + tax or more for a set of 4...

i wandered into a lowrider/rice rocket shop of all places, and got the set of 4 for $700, tax included, mount and balance included...

the deals are out there... just a matter of finding them...

 

I can't post pics from my phone but I've got the soft8 style rims they are 15x8 with 4.125 backspacing with 32x11.50 BFG A/Ts and I like the way it looks but like mike said you gotta run a spacer or it won't clear the caliper but the shop I got it at gave me a set of 1/4" spacers for free.. anyways my truck is in an old post here http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/suspension/135783-another-lift-question.html

2ktacopr3runn3r, what rims do you have? Something about them looks odd like the holes are too small or the center of your rim is too small?

 

Somewhat on topic, but I used to have an IS300 that I had to modify to make some particular rims I really wanted on the car. Basically I had to grind the caliper about 2mm then I recoated them with black caliper paint. Anyone ever thought about grinding the calipers on a Tacoma? It's a hell of alot safer than running spacers....

 

there have been 1 st gen owners grinding the calipers down since 1997 from what i can remember... a number of them went too far though and ended up with bigger headaches...

 

they are wheelers wheels, from wheelersoffroad.com. they have 7 holes instead of 8 and are custom made so that when those holes are cut there is not lip on the backside which is what hits the brake caliper

 

agreed! those wheels look really sharp. i love the white truck/black wheels combo. i just installed eagle alloy series 100s (15x8) on mine...



I've got black lug nuts on there now... the chrome ones were just put on by the shop as temps until the black ones were delivered.

 

yah, the Eagle Alloys Series 100s look great... i wish they had done a 4" backspace though... that 3.625" is a bit much...

 

yeah, 4" would probably be a bit nicer... right now, my tires are extended about 1.5" past the fender flares. it's not enough to get me pulled over (i don't think), but it'll definitely require more work to keep the sides of my truck clean!
