235/85/16 is all I've run for the past 10 years. Currently Duratracs. Readily available, no worry on fitment, great year round off road, don't stretch the limits of crappy stock gearing.

All my math tells me they’re just a shade taller than 265/75-16, which I guess would vary slightly between tire manufacturers. Does that check with you?

Just a hair under 32, or, one size up. Before switching, I ran 265/70/17 on my second Gen.

I just know they work well for me. If need be, out on a job, I can always get replacements in rural BC without traveling too far.

I get them siped when I buy them.

That’s why I’m not going with 255/85-16. They’re hard to find a round here lately and I’d hate to get stuck waiting for one on back-order if one goes bad.

I’m new to TW but not new to the pizza cutters. I’ve been running them on Jeeps for a while. I have a question as to the tallest 85/16 that can be ran on 3rd gen limited without lift or trimming. Is there notable changes (real calculations) in fuel economy? Thanks in advance.

If you care about fuel economy, stay stock. And buy another truck.

Really? A 255/85/16 will roll under a non lifted 2022 Tacoma? That’s a true 33” tire right there!;). This is what I run on my Jeep. Ok then a 235/85/16 bfg A/T ko2 should be good enough. Thanks for the input!

I appreciate the information, I did a rental and was surprised at the economy or lack there of however it is way better than a vehicle with 4:10 gears. I think it will hold its price over a 4-5 year ownership or at least hold enough value that I won’t be in a great big hole.

I forgot to ask, are you running 255/85/16 without a suspension lift? I was wanting to run a bfg 235/85/16 at. However I can get the 255/85/16 in another brand for about the same money and they are a 1” taller as I recall. Thanks

Good enough! I appreciate the info, I will pick up my gen 3 Saturday and it has factory 18”s. I have a set of 16” steel wheels that I’m gonna use and mount up some 255/85/16 then. If no lift required and no rubbing I’m sold.

The only thing I had to do was take off the mud flaps.

I'm on 255/85R16 on stock (OEM) wheels and do NOT have a lift. No rubbing.
I do run mud flaps, but they are not OEM.

Well I’ll see, I called and they have already installed the Toyota ones. My wife say you can tell an ole man drives a vehicle if it has mudflaps and a winch. I tell her the difference between a Jeep and a Harley is the winch goes on the front of a Jeep and the back of a Harley!

Based on the feedback in the below thread (and other general posts), the secret sauce to success with running 255/85/16s on a stock 3rd gen is the specs of the OEM OR TRD wheels. That’s not to say other wheels can’t lead you to success in your endeavor. But the specs will likely have to be pretty close to that of the OEM wheels.

There are no guarantees, especially given wheel choices.

Assuming stock 16" wheels I'd guesstimate that 235/85/16s have more than a 95% chance of fitting with no issues.
Assuming stock 16" wheels I'd guesstimate that 255/85/16s have about an 75% chance of fitting with no issues. Issues that do appear should most likely be resolved fairly easily (i.e mild hammering / heating, no CMC). There remains a chance that easy resolution doesn't happen.

If I were looking at 235/85/16s I'd probably also be looking at 265/75/16s as they are the same height and are also fairly commonly used on these trucks without issue, usually (and come from more manufacturers).

I don't have all of the experience with all of these. I have about a 1" lift all around and have been able to run the 255/85/16 Yoko Geolanders without issue (and I currently love these tires... I spent about 8 hours out on the trails today and they were amazing (they are also expensive and loud on the road)).
