Really can't beat buying a new Smitty from 4wp. Get 4wp's warranty, and you don't have to worry about buying a winch again (or I'm uh, told o_O)

If you don't draw blood, you're doing it wrong!
I was very close to getting a H/C bumper from Billy. I think he makes one of the most stout and simple/effective designs out there.

I ended-up welding my own DIY bumper out of scrap and a bunch of other crap (skeleton from a rusted out All-Poo tube bumper). The entire project was <$400 for parts/consumables, with the most expensive parts being the 4xInnovations hinge and latch kit. I didn't factor in the cost of beer I was drinking throughout, which probably pushed the total cost to $1000+
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...mper-build-aka-my-diy-h-c-rear-bumper.689120/

My brother and I also welded DIY plate bumper(s) from NWTI for my Dad's Tacoma - since they were somewhat local and he got both the front and rear kits for a helluva deal and was able to drive down to pick them up. The DIY kit was fairly easy to figure out and tack up, but it could have been a much simpler design without so many angles/small filler plates. We customized and mod'ed the design a bit based on my Dad's feedback during the build ad he is pleased with them, which is all that matters in the end.

Anyone with a 2005-2015 Long Bed interested in a Roll-N-Lock Rolling Aluminum Bed Cover?

I bought a bed rack, so I don't have a use for this anymore and would like to clear some space in my garage.

Details: It has since been pressure washed and painted with a textured matte black bed liner. It does need a few parts that can be ordered from the manufacturer, a new lock/key ($35) and the mounting hardware ($65)

Price takes into account the replacement parts needed.
    $150

Thanks! I didn't know they sold Smittybilt; I'll take a look.

Thanks for sharing, but that's way overkill for the use it'll realistically see. Chances are it'll be used more for pulling the occasional tree instead of the occasional truck

I’ve heard surprisingly great things about Harbor Freight winches. Matt from Matt’s Off Road Recovery(off road recovery pro on YouTube if you’re unfamiliar) swears by them and he uses them as hard as anybody.

If I knew what I know now about them I would’ve gotten a Badlands Apex over my Warn VR 10-S. $200 cheaper, IP69X waterproof(instead of ip68), superior cone brake, faster line speed and more capacity not that you really need it in a taco.

Not that I haven’t been happy with the Warn, it’s been used many of times including in a few extreme situations and it’s been submerged a few times and gotten the job done but the HF is cheaper and undeniably superior.

Just throwing this out there, as my perspective. There is ZERO real world data backing this up.

The danger of "trusting" a HF winch for recovery is that typically, the average shmo, uses the winch maybe once or twice a year. Matt probably uses it daily. With daily use, you will use it day after day and it will either work or it won't. For the average schmuck, when you go to use it, that one day a year, and suddenly it doesn't work, that's way more catastrophic than it not working one day out of 365. Not to mention, Matt has a huge crew behind him to bail him out. When I'm alone on a trail, I want to know for certain, my recovery gear works.

I personally have WAY more faith in a Warn working after a year or two sitting idle, than I do on a Badlands winch.

    Just my $0.02...

While I would argue and agree this is a dumb thing to put on your own site when you don't answer the question, the facts still remain fact, and I wouldn't be surprised if they're all in the same manufacturing facility. I wouldn't hesitate this point to get a badlands winch, in fact I do have a 2500lb one. Unless the Warn is 100% US made and sourced materials, it's not worth the $ imo. Besides, if you do the warranty on a Badlands, you can drop into almost any town and get a replacement on the spot, you can't say that for Warn

One of their American made ones sure. But those are an absurd amount of money to spend for occasional use. I don’t see any reason to trust an VR more than a Badlands besides the sticker on the front. I wouldn’t even be surprised if they were made in the same factory and likely the same quality assurance process. Warn ain’t having them shipped to Clackamas and personally checking them.

The biggest reason unused winches fail is corrosion from moisture intrusion. When it’s moving it gets better lubricated and heating up the motor and brake help dissipate condensation.

Considering that if anything the IP69X rating alone makes it the better choice in that case, that’s an independently tested standard they can’t make that up.

Again, it’s not that I’m dissatisfied with my Warn, but a friend has a badlands and it frankly feels like an equal quality product to the Warn as far as material and fit and finish quality and it wins on the spec sheet and the price tag. Note that I specifically mean the Apex 12k in comparison to the VR-Evo series. The the lower end HF winches are pretty junky and obviously the Zeon is the best if you have the cash but the Apex is just a solid product.

They honestly don’t only make junk in my experience. I needed a stubby ratchet and got one of their higher end ones and it’s like nice, nice. Like better than my usual American made Craftsman set from the 1990s.

I suppose you have a very valid point... my only experience is with the US made Warn winches. I've yet to rebuild a VR.

However, the US made Warn winches are very obtainable. Here is one that I bought for $60... after an enjoyable rebuild, it was good as new and worked like a champ. I highly recommend people buy a "fixer upper" and restore it. You save money, learn how it works, and know how to fix it.

I was going to say, the best thing anyone can do no matter what brand winch, is take the whole thing apart and dielectric grease every connection.
The 2nd most problem I have come across over the years, is the winch controller plugs breaking/pulling out. This is solved by getting a fully wireless setup (dont have to touch anything on my smittybilt to operate it, just a press of the button on the remote) and glue/rtv the controller plug cover on so no moisture enters there.
