Don't really feel like cutting a hole in my new truck's headliner just yet.

Amazon sells the 12 volt to 3 volt converter for about $7. I have a wiring diagram somewhere, so when I get home I’ll try to find it and post it here.

I'm not sure I need a converter. I don't think the switch will send 12V to the opener. I think it just acts as a momentary switch that closes the circuit which activates the opener.

Correct, the dash switch takes the place of the button on your remote. The converter is only necessary when your opener has a 3 volt battery inside and you want to power it off the truck battery (12 volts) instead. Some remote brands use a small 12 volt battery which makes it easy to power the remote off the truck.

Oh...So doing it that way would mean not having to replace the battery in the remote when it dies?

Yup, means not having to go back in behind the dash to change the battery. Haven’t found the schematic yet but still looking. In the meantime here’s a link to what inspired me.

ROFL - friend of mine back in the day... waaaaaaaaay back rigged one up that was always 'on' and electrical-taped it to his grill
so when he pulled near his house it just opened automatically - really impressed the gals back in the day... this was 1975...
