TRD Sport vs. TRD Off Road

I was set on a TRD OR but found a TRD Sport I like. Now I'm torn. I am wondering just how big the difference is in off road capability between the two. I know it would be nice to have a locker, but not sure I'd ever use the crawl control or multi-terrain functions. Sure, they would be nice to have if needed but.... How well does the automatic limited slip diff work in these rigs?

 

Sounds to me like you have already made your decision.

 

It all comes down to what you will use it for and your capabilities. If you are going to lift it and rock crawl with it, get the sport and put an aftermarket locker in it when you regear. If you are single, get the sport as the skewp drops panties (so they say). I find the sport rear end (same as in my limited) to be very capable of many trails if you know how to drive. I didn't have any issues in Moab with the non-locker. If you aren't mechanically inclined or at the max on your budget, get the OR as it is very capable stock.

 

When I was getting ready to buy my Tacoma, I wasn't set on a Sport or Off-Road. I was set on certain features, such as a manual transmission, Access Cab, and 6-foot bed. It turned out that the combination of features was only available in a Sport, so that is what I got. I'm happy with it. It has a stiff suspension, which is very responsive on ordinary roads.

So I would say, make a list of the features that you want first, and then let the chips fall where they may.

 

Don’t underestimate MTS/ATRAC available on the OR and Pro. Because it doesn’t interfere with steering, you can leave it on 100% of the time; unlike a locker. I have the OR, I wheel it on trails rated as “most difficult”, and I use my locker about 1/10 as much as ATRAC.

There is no factory limited slip differential from the factory. There is however a traction control mode called AutoLSD that is only available in 2wd that is decent for getting out of a icy parking spot, but that’s about it.

That said, it doesn’t sound like you need an OR.

 

If you are torn between a Sport and Off Road, have you looked at a Pro? My Sport does fine in deep snow in the winter. Only you know for sure how you will be using the truck and what trim will make you the most happy.

 

They are all the same, just pick a color you like.

 

The "e" diff is surprisingly good. It's gotten my 2WD Sport out of a few jams. Is it as good as a locker? Ha, no. But it's pretty good.

Trd limited:
- basically a premium sport with fancier leather interior and 18x7.5 wheels

Trd Pro:
- all the things for an extra 5-10k+ depending on dealership
- 16" pro wheels
- pro skid plate
- pro shocks
- pro branded ucas
- pro branded led headlights
- trd pro exhaust
- trd cold air intake
- probably some other stuff

Everything else is just differences in tech packages and luxury packages (blind spot monitoring, sun roof, led headlights, leather seats)

You have your suspension backwards. The Sport has the stiffer suspension.

 

I like the scoop and painted flairs but couldn’t find one in the right color. Needless to say dealer found an OR in the right color and it will be mine.

 

You forgot the inclinometer. Can’t leave home without one.

Oh and crawl control.

Yea I like the color matched bumpers and door handles on the sport. Less things I gotta de-chrome

 

Someone posted above it was only on the 2wd models, so thats why I mentioned it and asked well it performs

 

Like I said, no 3rd gens don’t come with a mechanical limited slip differential from the factory. You are likely confusing it with traction control mode named AutoLSD. It uses the ABS brakes to prevent uneven wheel spin. See the thread on traction control modes I posted for more info.

The Toyota marketing materials are misleading and there is also a lot misleading crap on the internet concerning the traction control modes.

 

Sport has the air dam too.

 

Visa versa the suspension but yeah. Sport is set up to tackle corners, OR won't rattle your tits on washboard.
