I just had my truck tuned with the basic OVtune to include a charge increase for my AGM.

I just want to check that things are correct in that regard. Using a voltage monitor in the cigarette port with the truck running I'm hovering around 14.3-14.5 volts. If I go above 3500 RPM, with the AC off, I dance with 14.8. I think one time I've seen 14.9. It is very hot here, upper 90s if that matters. My Odyssey battery says it's optimal charge voltage at 68* is 14.4-14.8 volts, so I believe I'm okay. I just want to confirm that I'm not over charging my battery. With a voltmeter right to the battery with the truck stationary, even at 3500 RPM the voltage doesn't get above 14.5.

Full disclaimer I know nothing about the ins and outs of the tune or tuning process, I fully trust the person who did the tune to do it right but I'd like to learn. @tonered what do I need to know?

You should be okay, although people in particularly hot climates can find value in settings that taper with engine coolant temp. Based on your bio though, you're in NY and can see the other end of the spectrum as well. Nonetheless, I wouldn't worry about it for the time being unless you start seeing a particularly frequent occurrence of 14.9+ for long periods of time

Thanks. I only had it done two days ago but seeing anything 14.7 or higher definitely seems to be the exception, and under normal driving it stays around 14.4. But you’re right on the climate. It might have hit 100° today but come February up in the mountains seeing -20° isn’t unheard of.

That is a bit high for my taste. I'd want it in the mid-region or lower. That's just me though.

My own personal preference is for a bit lower as well.

I have heard of people preferring it running a little higher though.

Yeah. I can see folks wanting the full charge voltage.

What should it be under normal driving conditions and what’s the highest you’d want to see with higher RPMs? What’s the danger of going too high? Shortened battery life I imagine but any more serious risks?

I wouldn’t want to see anything over 14.5 when it’s over 75-80F out. Higher voltage only needed when it’s cold. 14.3 is where I try to keep things for AGM. Leave a little margin. 14.7 during a cold start on a cold day (<30F) before engine coolant comes up to temp is ok. Anything over that I’d personally be a little concerned. That’s just me though.

Watch your battery, if it starts swelling, you’re overdoing it.

Who did your tune? That’s a spicy AGM setup.

We've been setting it to about 14.2v. A decent bump over stock, but plenty of margin.

The charge voltage should not vary by RPM once above idle.

Ok all good info to know thank you. If RPM doesn’t change it, what is the best way to measure what the voltage is? A voltmeter on the battery or using a display in the cigarette plug like I’ve been doing. It’s possible that $6 Amazon item isn’t the most accurate either whereas I’d be more inclined to trust the voltmeter.

Just toon the truck for a drive, ambient temp is 75°. While driving the reader in the 12v plug was showing anywhere from 14.6-14.8 mostly at 14.8. At idle, the same reader showed 14.7 and a voltmeter directly on the battery was holding a steady 14.88 volts.

Thinking too high and to get in touch with who did the tune?

I always check at the terminals to see what the difference is at the cab display.

If anything the terminals are .1 higher than the cab display. I’m going to go for a longer drive soon and see how it reads after everything has really warmed up but I’m thinking I’ll feel better if I have the voltage adjusted lower.

Personally, my opinion based on a lot of testing I did on this, your tune is set too high. I’d ask the tuner to back it down. There are setting posted in here that will be safer in my opinion.

My settings and reasoning is shown here:

Agreed. I’m on the books for Wednesday to meet up with him to lower it. I went for an hour drive and it’s definitely holding steady at 14.88 at the battery. Definitely too high.

What should we aim for roughly it to be consistent around? 14.3?

Good info to have. Now you know what is really going on with you cab display. A 0.1V drop is par for the course.
