I went for a second test drive and I love the truck, but.......

We are talking about city, highway and off-road driving. Well and towing.

 

hmmmmmmm. that sounds like HERESY to me. Just point to a random number on the spec sheet and say "that means its not a truck!".

 

What it means is most do not understand the math. Yes, I can develop more torque from a 5hp engine than a 300 HP engine. It's all about the time it takes to develop that torque.
My point? There is no such thing as a truck engine. It is about a transmission and final drive.

 

I know reading comprehension and memory can be hard for some people but if you flip just a couple pages back you can see that I never brought up "real truck engines". Another member asked what I would define one as after I corrected two people stating it was a car engine, one even mentioned it was from the 90's... I simply stated the 1GR was never found in a single car/uni-body platform which is an objective fact. Of course that got all the 3rd gen owners (assuming you are based on your panties in a wad) upset and going off on tangents asking about what a "real" truck motor is then.

Me: "The 1GR was never in a car nor in the 90's, stop spreading misinformation "

3rd genner " Ok I’ll play. So you are saying 1GR is a “real truck engine” yes? "

me: "Depends on what you define as a "real truck engine". I would say that the 1GR motor was only found on larger body on frame vehicles, trucks & true SUV's (not unibody crossovers) and not found on a single car like a sedan or anything with a unibody for that matter."

Them: " What do you define as a “real truck engine”? I keep hearing that 4.0 is “a real truck engine” from 2nd genners."

Me: "XYZ criteria"

3rd genner's: "OMG THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TRUCK ENGINE REEEE"

Me: " Ok then why did you ask a loaded question and then double down? I never made the claim, I just corrected misinformation and then attempted to answer a loaded question that was asked twice"

You: "would like to add to your statement that the only real "truck" trannies are manuals!?!" "hmmmmmmm. that sounds like HERESY to me. Hopefully with it all laid it in front of you now you can see how stupid you look and how 5 minutes of reading could've saved you from looking like a dumbass. Maybe next time don't get so emotional and respond so quickly and actually thoroughly read so you don't embarrass yourself over and over again.

 

2nd gen 4.0 don't have nearly the issues the 3rd gen 3.5 have. Between $$$$ timing cover reseals to motors blowing up at 60k miles.

Since there is zero data available to us on these failures, ask any toyota tech/ service advisor that's been around the block for a while. They will tell you the same thing...

You can try and and dance around this fact all you want but its true

 

Still worthy of the investment since it's something that doesn't need to be replaced multiple times.

 

The 4.0 had the timing cover leak issue too... quick search here shows them dropping like flys. We don't know the true numbers only Toyota does but it could be 1%, 5%, 10% that had the issue. Maybe even as high as 30%.

12 replied yes in 2011 lol. That's less than 2 per year since 2005 lol. The timing covers would also just weep a bit. Not blow out like the 3.5

not sure how that falls under the "dropping like flys" category. Plus you don't have to remove the motor do repair it. It less than half the cost. Sorry try again.

My ‘21 Tundra with the 5.7L averages 15-16 mpg pretty regularly. I’m waiting on a ‘22 Tacoma right now, mostly because I’m going to gain 5 or 6 mpg right out of the gate. Figuring 28 fill-ups a year @ $4/gal I’ll save enough to more than pay the insurance. Well worth the switchback for me.

I like the Tundra. It’s been a nice reliable truck. However, I love the Tacoma’s. Miss my ‘18 all the time.

 

We don't know any of the data. AGAIN, like I said, talk to someone at a Toyota dealer that has been in the game a while. They will confirm what I am saying.

I’ve had two Tacoma’s. I think you are going to be disappointed.

 

Op, is asking for a tough request if not possible....gas mileage like a prius, a small truck like a maverick with the torque of a powerstroke diesel. Yeah, i want one to.

 

All of my Toyotas weren’t the most powerful or fastest thing, but they got me where I wanted go. The 3rd Gen is the fastest and most powerful out of those, will get you where you want to go and in a hurry if need be. And still not enough for some. It is like speeding in the passing lane and you’ll still have some knucklehead up your ass.

Not sure if Barbie had a truck, if she did it was my sisters and it probably got destroyed in a battle with G.I. Joe… lol!

We used to get together with the neighbors to combine our hot wheels to make super long tracks.

BattleKat, I see you have a bump camp. How has that effected your mileage?
Zoo truck, you have misrepresented what I was hoping for. I do not need anywhere near the torque of my powerstroke diesel. For a truck as small as the Tacoma, I need more economy than 20 point something miles per gallon on the highway. That is what I was getting after 25 min on the interstate at 70-75. The size of the truck is a compromise. I am willing to make that compromise for increased fuel economy. The compromise is not on the same scale. I am giving up a ton of capability for small gain in economy. That compromise is much more palatable at 23-24mpg. When you then account for lower owner cost, due to less complexity and everything being half the size, the smaller truck has a good place in the line up.
The maverick may work, but it is not as much truck as the Tacoma. But, the Maverick gets 29mpg on the highway. I don't expect the Tacoma to get that, but 23-24mpg simply is what something that small should get these days. I am pretty certain, Toyota will deliver that. It needs to close the MPG gap between the itself and the Maverick.
To be blunt, I love truck, but it ain't enough truck to justify the MPG it gets in the real world. You can't have full size trucks getting better fuel mileage. I am sure this will be addressed in the next gen. Hopefully, they fix the center rear seat as well.
