Lol pay attention to Rory's description... It flopped over for awhile. They drained it and it started right up.

Why do people do this to their $30k+ trucks? Is it considered cool or something?

So reading about smoking on the hills thread, what’s the consensus about catch cans, do they really help alleviate this just by collecting the excess oil before it causes this issue? I don’t climb hills for fun, but there have been some roads in the desert that were pretty steep and had me worried a bit about this…

Catch cans are discussed near the end here:https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/smoking-while-on-a-incline.511373/

I have a catch can. If I go to the offroad park nearby I disconnect the pcv tube and let it dangle so the intake side can only pull air. I am thinking of doing something with a valve on the pcv intake side.

Saves from oil flooding the intake, but supposedly oil starvation is a problem as well

Yep, it’ll help, only until the catch can fills up. And yeah the difference in attitude (nose high vs nose low) changes the potential issue, (oil pooling in head vs oil starvation)

@FloridaFree does that cause a check engine light from pirated air?

No I have never had a check engine light.

I think a 3 way ball valve would be the way to go to avoid catch can fill. When you offroad you turn the valve handle and block the pcv air intake and the crank case pcv side remains open so that it can exhaust pressure.

What about a giant catchcan that would hold all 6 quarts of oil?

Just build a dry sump oil system...... Then, stand the truck up on the tailgate for stance.

So the intake is sucking in unfiltered air? Do you have a drivability issues at all? That's basically a giant vacuum leak. If you're going to do something like this I think you need to go all the way and do it to both sides of the PCV system.

The intake is pulling from the catch can which I empty. It has some dopy filter k&n looking filter.

Got ya. Surprised you don't get a check engine light. The MAF sensor no longer has accurate info on how much air the engine is taking in.
