Checking for Readiness codes would not yield anything. The OP has owned the Taco for a significant amount of time. The Readiness codes can be set to Complete as early as 40mi if driven the strict cycle and usually by 100mi if driven normally.

Also, OBD will report time and distance from the last DTC reset, but a DTC reset can be done by any OBD scanner or a battery disconnect.

Yep, I wasn't clear there. I meant when you are buying a used vehicle you should check that. No guarantees it will find an issue, but you might find someone resetting DTCs before the sale, which should raise a question.

What was the maintenance history on this vehicle and what is the exact diagnosis ? You can't see anything with a bore scope that causes "knocking" unless you have some sort of Valve to cylinder contact. Which means you skipped timing?

Have the plugs ever been changed ? Go grab one OEM plug and swap it out. Perhaps the electrodes are toast. Just do the cylinder in question.

I've be up in chibougamau, quebec in the winter, and its no joke. -40 can be pretty common that time of year. Everything the truck doesn't want to move.

I think your conversion is a bit off.... -40c is -40f, not -100f.

    nah. The other is correct
    104 degrees fahrenheit
    Formula
    (40°C × 9/5) + 32 = 104°F

It takes six minutes to warm from 22F to 190F. I have been in vehicles when it was that cold to never reach operating temp.

People crash these trucks every day, I would have an independent shop put in a low mile used engine.

You bought a used truck and it has issues, and you’re blaming Toyota? o_O

Bet the previous owner abused it and then traded it in. Buying used is a roll of the dice.

    Mostly stock
Block heater would've saved the day.
Oil in a plug would suggest a VC/SP gasket, no?
    Could've been an unrelated issue.
