on my old ford escape i accidentally put a little over half a quart of 90 weight gear oil in it during an oil change. i realized my mistake when i was wondering why it was taking so long to drain from the funnel. engine ran really quiet when i drove to the store to buy the right oil to change it again.

You can use 5w-20 no problem. Take a look at this chart from a Mexico Tacoma, all the weights listed are expectable including 15w 40 provided you stay in the temperature range.

The magnuson moss act says you can use any bran of oil and filter without voiding warranty so aftermarket filter would mean nothing. Unless the oil was extremely thick I doubt any tech would bother trying to figure out what the actual weight was and even if he tried I’m not sure it would be possible to tell a 5-20 form a 5-30 after it’s been cooked a few times. I feel like it’s more likely he was denied based on performance mods or something if it happened at all. I take all these stories with a grain of salt.

Zero harm. But unlike 0w20 which are all synthetic, 5w20 can be conventional, synthetic or a blend. If it's a conventional or blend change it in 5k miles. If it's a synthetic you can go up to 10k if you choose to do so.

And the difference between 0w and 5w in cold temperature starting is negligible. Air temps would have to be -30°F or less to begin to measure the flow difference

They absolutely will, if faced with having to charge Toyota Corporate for doing a $10,000 plus repair job in their shop.

I do believe that car blew up for other reasons and not the oil, but Toyota did put that as one of the 3 things they found to deny engine replacement.

It says "an oil of a higher viscosity may be better suited if you operate vehicle in blah, blah conditions".

Obviously that's not an exact quote. But that's Toyota's way around the EPAs mandate that the oil that the engine was certified on is the one that has to be recommended......not required
