Doing a little bit at a time.
Just buy a new muffler it will be a lot cheaper than a welder...lol Plus if you do not repair or replace the new truck will not pass state inspection. Get it fixed and move forward!

Because a new OEM muffler costs way more then you think and some generic muffler from the typical muffler shop lasts about 3 years because they are made of cheapo carbon steel.

In your state a patched muffler will not pass state inspection? In CO we just need to pass emissions, but a new vehicle doesn't need to do emissions for almost a decade. A patched muffler would certainly be fine, maybe it would catch attention if it looked like shit.

Perfect excuse for a new muffler. I got a Flowmaster and nice black tip for $300 installed from a local muffler shop.

    Green too.

Had a pair of CIBIES in that baby for running the back roads of the Florida panhandle w/o killing deer and graded roads in piney woods to get to canoe only fishing holes.

And some KMart fog lights under the rear bumper on a toggle to make easy Whaler trailer connections at night when fishing the coast.

Plus it had working AC and only 70k miles, well ahead of the un-airconditioned '67 Comet I sold to buy it.

I'm in CO but appreciate the thought. Give me some time to think about my plan. People on here drive 40k trucks but think a welder is expensive.

Mufflers have nothing to do with emissions.

That's what your catalytic converters are for.

Yeah but for emissions they check around the vehicle for holes in exhaust. I think in part because this is a way to cheat the detection devices they put by the tailpipe. Tacoma doesn't need emissions for 7 years though I think.

    Just noticed you're in CO.

Man, and I thought CA was bad.

Vehicles don't require smog for the first 6 model years meaning 2016 models are only now going to require smog this coming year.

No inspection though, unless something prompts a tech to do so and it's usually on a vehicle that's subject to modification IE Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, etc. and only if you bring attention to yourself.

Get some thin sheetmetal cut into a patch then use a wire brush and brake cleaner for surface prep, then use JB weld to bond patch over it.

This would probably work as well as gluing a piece of cheese to the muffler using mustard.
