Should I trade my Tacoma for a Silverado Trail Boss?

Unless you make good money in a secure job, you're financially damning yourself. I'd focus on saving money and waiting for economy to crash to invest money.

Also if you offroad I would not even consider a fullsize.

 

What is AFM?. Do u mean MDS?

Active fuel management. GM may call it something different. Basically cylinder deactivation. AFM may be a Ford term.

 

AFM and DFM are GM terms. I think MDS is what Ram calls it.

My "reliable" Chevy 5.3 failed at 135k miles earlier this year.
It made me appreciate my old Toyotas and my new Toyota that much more.

 

Man, that is terrible. Knew a guy who had a 16 Silverado and his transmission went out at 100k and he was like that’s normal for this truck like it’s no big deal. It’s just hard for me to fathom how people accept that regardless of any brand loyalty. I want reliability..I don’t get it man.

My 2004 silverado was a great truck, newer ones aren't bad we have a bunch of them and they all work fine. Boss trades them whenever they get past 100 except for the diesels which go into the 200s. Another company I know of has all fords, no issues there either.

To each his own but the new 5.3s seem to be ticking time bombs. I do alot of RVing and you see and talk to all kinds of truck guys. More than a random few told me about their 5.3 horror stories. If I was going into a full size I would be getting the FORD 2.7 ecoboost and I used to be a Chevy guy. Or I could just wait until they figured out the Tundra in a year or two.

 

The 2.7 is a fantastic little motor.

For a pure work truck 1/2 ton I'd take my chances with a used tundra 5.7.

 

Get your logic out of here. We sip Kool-aid and worship the almighty Tacoma here.
Also I laugh at people saying the half tons get bad gas mileage. Every half ton I’ve had got the same or better than my Tacoma. I had a F-150 Tremor that averaged 19 before I sold it.

 

Yea I agree on the Tundra but I was thinking new. The 2.7 FORD I hear nothing but good things. I like it better than the 3.5 ecoboost which I've really never heard anything bad about either. 2.7 seems to be the sweet spot. I never realized that the f150s also come with all different frame strengths so without the right frame you still can't tow what you might think even with the 5.0 coyote or 3.5.

 

I love how the Chevy's look but would NEVER buy one of the newer generations unless you go diesel. The V8's are plagued with engine issues (due to direct injection) and the transmissions commonly go bogus before 100,000K. They 4/6/8 system is shit and the converter in the transmission is setup to go on/off throughout the entire range of gears; even under 20 mph. They did all of these tweaks to try and obtain decent fuel mileage. It doesn't work. Right now, the Ford's are more reliable - and that's saying something lol. (FYI- I used to work for GM corporate so in no way am I biased against them).

 

Didn't GM disable cylinder deactivation on current models due to the chip shortage?

 

I was going to trade my 3.5 for a 2.7 just to get rid of the super crew, but I like that dual exhaust you can get on the 3.5 with the black appearance package. I don't really need 1/2 ton and want to get away from the turbos. Engine has been fantastic so far.

 

The 2.7 Ford is a turbo also

 

I know I test drove a STX super cab before. It wouldn't make much sense gor me to go from one turboed engine to another. The 2.7 is nice, but I'd rather go to a 6.2 F-250 with manual locking hubs and no turbo.
