Also, if you must use a key to start it, use a key to push the start button. You can use whatever key you want for this key start option.

My initial thought was that ECU reprogramming might be more reasonable and effective, but it sounds like nobody has cracked that nut yet. Switching to a key would simply be replacing the button switch with a keyed switch, and all the programming would remain intact. Any keyed device would likely just mimic the operation of the button, and that's not really the goal here. The goal seems to be disabling or resetting the timer that shuts things off, which seems to be the main annoyance. Not sure enough people with the right skills and equipment would have this same annoyance and spend the time to figure out how to reprogram the thing.

Maybe a simple device that you could switch on that tricks the computer into thinking the brake was pressed? Seems like that resets the timer.

I have a keyed ignition and I never sit in my truck for long periods of time nor let it idle long, so I am baffled by this post. OP, are you sure that a keyed ignition will solve your problems or are you just ranting?

Wait so is this auto shutoff mode only on 2020+ trucks like someone mentioned, or all 3rd gens? I have an '18 and I haven't noticed it, but I don't think I've left the truck in the on position for that long.

 

You won’t find this to be an easy or economical task, as the push to start isnt an easily deleted “feature”. The ignition and security that the truck requires to start and run really make your request difficult.

Unless the aftermarket has a plug and play solution, your best and simplest option would be to buy a Tacoma with key’d operation.

 

An additional benefit of the manual gearbox is the lovely real key

I would have paid extra to get a key and not the push button.

I like the push button starts on pre-1960 vehicles. I do not enjoy the rigid Nanny attitude on modern ones.

I’ve had several and i find them extremely annoying.

I'm the opposite. I keep my push button key in my pants coin pocket. I have learned through the hard way, never leave your keys at your desk at work. If you venture away from your desk, and the fire alarm goes off - uh oh.

Worse. If you venture away from your desk, and an explosion happens in February in NH, and you are stuck outside in khakis and a polo, with no keys..... - uh oh!

Anyway, it's nice and convenient to get in, not need to get the key out, hit the button and go.

All that said - whether the vehicle is a push button or turn key doesn't matter to me. I'm good with either, and it being one or the other has zero effect on how much I do or do not like a vehicle.

 

If it's a manual transmission you get a key no matter which trim you get

 

My new SR came with a key, I don't like those buttons. However, I DID like the floor-mounted start button on my '29 Plymouth but that was a completely different experience.
