Hey yall, tried to torque lbj bolts after replacing cv axel and wrecked them. I'll either have to retap and run a larger bolt or jump in front of dumptruck and be done with this. Anyone have any experience at all with the moog assembled knuckle? It's way m I re affordable than a new or even used spindle. Tell me something.

Not going to ask what you were torquing them too but you should be able to salvage the knuckle since when the bolt shears it's typically further up and not flush with the knuckle.

Other than that, I have no experience with aftermarket knuckles. If that is all you can afford, then that's it although I personally would go for OEM only in this case. Salvage yard, eBay, local listings all might have what you're looking for.

    Good reference thread:

    Good luck.

Thanks. Yeah the torque spec said 112 from a chart on the forum here. It seemed high but I didn't trust my feeling or try to compare to another chart. Feel like a idiot

Do you have a link to where you saw that? That should be corrected.

That number is at least twice what the highest torque LBJ bolts use.

112 ft lbs is for 2nd gen Tacomas… or the actual nut on the ball joint stud. The spindle bolts are around 40 ft lbs

Yeah I miss read the chart like a absolute fool. It's 59 for the ball joint to knuckle. I did the 112 to the lower ball joint itself. Dang

The good news is the bolt breaking off likely can be drilled out and backed out.

Or did you pull the threads out?

There's so little material to tap I'm concerned about cracking. Any tips on what size tap would be best? Is there a sleeve the threads are in or is it straight into the steering knuckle? You guys are awesome btw

The treads are likely toast all around. I went in a pass at a higher and higher torque amount trying to reach the 112. Geeeeezzzz that sounds so laughably stupid.

The one closest to us. It has the bolt poking thru as much as the one intact on the top spindle side

You're going to need to remove the lower ball joint completely. From there you'll see the broken studs. Should be able to get vice grips on them. When I had 1 bolt sheer, I was literally able to remove the remainder by hand. You might have to remove the knuckle but probably not. Get that LBJ off completely and take a look.

You give me hope. I will do this. Not my first broken bolt but by far the most heartbreaking and hopeless feeling one so far.

Get new bolts from the dealer and get yourself a helicoil set and drill the holes out to spec after drilling into the rest of the old bolts and using an easy out to remove them.

Definitely replace all of them with new from Toyota (depending on which you're using - refer to the thread I linked above).

It happens brother... Hell, I snapped off one of the bolts that secure the shifter assembly. Wasn't paying attention and there ya go .. lol.

Here is my LBJ fckup hahaha

Easy outs and Helicoils I've had a hard time with before. I guess I'll try them again
