    It's a solenoid in the 3rd gens.

PWM isn't special, it's just the most efficient way to output a lower voltage than the source voltage. I also don't think 12V will hurt it, but it hasn't been empirically tested yet.

To my complete and utter surprise, you can get a TRD off-road with a rear locker and no 4wd. Apparently there is a market for that in the southwest US.

Also...according to the stock throttle maps the throttle won't open fully in 4Lo. From what I vaguely remember, you can get about 30% of the engine's power when your foot is flat to the floor.

wut? Really? I can’t deny or confirm, but I don’t personally experience a lack of power in 4lo unless I let the rpm drop too low. At the same time, it’s rare that I go WOT in 4lo.

    Toyota does make that.

2wd off-road model. You can google it if you don’t believe me.

If you’re serious about wanting to build a drifty Prerunner thing, sell this truck, buy one of those, and build it like this. Would be cool to see.

So yes and no- with the shifter in S3 or lower, you can bypass this. If it’s in D, you have some limitations.

@3JOH22A can explain this better. He’s got it all down to a science and understands the exact parameters 4 low has.

I haven't put much effort into sorting this out, but typically unless it's a simple solenoid, I try to avoid controlling it with a toggle switch until I know more about the circuit.

All I know about this diff is that when I crawled under the truck I didn't see the big ass actuator motor hanging off the 3rd, but it had a locker switch, so it must be magnetic. I read a thread here (maybe the one you linked?) about someone who tried to sort it out...seamed like he knew what he was doing, and gave up.

I'm at point in my life where I balance effort and cost to value. If I need a locker I can engage in 2WD or 4HI, I'll put in an ARB or something that comes with a toggle switch in the box. lol. After thinking about it for quite a while. I can't really imagine a situation where I'd need a locked diff when I wasn't in 4 LO.

I'm the guy who's adding a crawl box not for more torque but because I want to be able to go slower (I have 3 pedals).

    Maybe I'm getting old. lol

My Bronco absolutely will do that, but I also paid $400 for it and have my Tacoma and SAAB to drive if it blows up. Not sure I would risk it on a new truck tbh.
