Gutless due to gear ratios?

I have it and it’s definitely worth it, although they just sent me a new one last week and it seems to have returned everything to stock. Maybe they sent me the wrong update.

The first version was definitely night at day difference. What I hated most is when the engine is bogged down on the highway in 5th it forgets about 4th apparently, downshifts to 3rd which is almost redline, then shifts to 4th a second or 2 later. OVTune fixed that.

Sent you a new what? You have OVTune already? What octane are you running?

Ok now I'm interested in this. Brand new here and overwhelmed. I was thinking re gear also on my 18 crew 4x4 because of the 285-70/17 going on this week but what is the OVTune and is this aftermarket or done at the dealer? I'm in the mountains of AZ at 7000' and this truck is way under powered if you ask me, constantly shifting and running 4 grand. My 06 4.0 gets better mileage and much faster. I was worried at the dealership when i bought it but was assured it was good. Anyways, I'll keep reading.....

Just bought a new 2022 Tacoma and what I found out is it has 107 ft. lbs. of torque at 1,800 rpm which is cruising speed down the freeway. That's pathetic. My old jeep liberty had 320 ft.lbs. at 1800 it NEVER down shifted going up even mountain passes.

I'm pretty happy with the 5.29s. I'd still prefer a torquer engine, but what can you do?

I'm not so sure a tune is gonna help. Looks pretty close to stock on the website:

Yes. I still have it but after 320k it needs a head gasket so it sits in my garage waiting for me to fix it.

I have the Overland Torque Tune which helped a little. Everything else is stock. Doing some research here, someone mentioned that I should turn on the ECT and leave it on. I tried that on my way back home after work and I have to say that is the way it should drive ALL the time! The constant shifting without it is as unnerving as a political debate!

You have to look no further than the 3rd and 2nd gen power curves. While the 3rd gen (blue curve) has more power, it only exceeds the 2nd gen power (orange curve) at speeds above 5000 rpm and for speeds below 5000 rpm the 2nd gen has quite a bit more power over the 3rd gen engine. The power dip at 3700 rpm doesn't help either when you are seeking acceleration and lack of torque rise on the 3rd gen engine is not helping. Still more power and torque than you need in most cases but if you're coming from a 2nd gen it will be noticeable difference in how the truck performs.

PS: Power curves are approximations generated from chassis dyno curves from the below post and scaled up to Toyota advertise power rating. As such they show relative differences and may not represent actual performance.

I thought the same thing as OP when I got to drive my friends 2018 TRD OR. I have a 2014 TRD OR with stock gears and 33” E load tires.
The 3rd gen felt sluggish so we found a long flat road out in the desert and did a drag race.

Even with my heavy tires, lift and extra weight (sliders and junk in the bed) I pulled almost 2 truck lengths on him, BUT at about 65mph he quickly overlook me and by 90mph he had 2 truck lengths on me!

based on the graphs posted above this makes perfect sense

I tried to scale the 4.0 vs 3.5 torque based on the data in that link. Definitely similar to hp difference. I put a green smudge about where the 3.5 is lacking to the 4.0

I find that very hard to believe. My truck has about 600 pounds of extra weight and 33s. Drives just fine at 1500-2000 RPMs, even up slight hills.

I find it hard to believe people spend $40,000 on something with zero research. Wait, no I don't. :bananadead:

I did zero research when I bought my truck, I trusted Toyota. Well I knew it comes with a new engine but that’s about it. Even put down deposit without test driving the truck, worked out great.
