So I managed to install the driver side cams and get their dots aligned but I didn’t use a service bolt or anything. Just slapped them right in and the dots lined up. Do I need to redo driver side?
This might be a dumb question but I’m suppose to use service bolt for both driver and passenger side exhaust cams right?

And everything I read and watch they’re always referring to “the service bolt”???? Like am I missing something? Is there a certain bolt I’m suppose to be using that I just haven’t seen or do I just use any bolt I can find that’ll fit??

Reference the HeadINST.pdf I sent. Mentioned on pages 2, 4 and 6. Paging @jacobrippey, @Grousin - any advice to give?

Ok so by the grace of God I somehow lucked out and found a bolt that threads through both wheels perfectly.
Now tell me if I’m saying this right…

the intake cam wheel should thread in where the red lines are? The teeth don’t look lined up perfectly. Is that ok? Is that what’s suppose to happen once I remove the bolt? It’ll just spring back then creating constant tension both ways?

I've never come close to doing this job. However, I think if they don't look lined up, I'd try again. Factory illustration shows them lined up. Can they be aligned and then torque the bolt down? Before the bolt is tightened, room for slight play to align?

ALSO, take a look at this. Now it's just one dude on YT and have no idea if he's doing it right but he does discuss it in detail. Take a look. Will start at relevant section when hitting play.

    Yeah so on the bolt-
One trick is to use one of your valve cover bolts on each cam- that way if you forget to remove the bolt, you’ll figure it out when you are short a bolt at valve cover install.

you need to take the other cam back out, tension spring, install bolt, reinstall cam.

don’t overthink the gear teeth lining up when installing bolt- the bolt will only thread in when you have the tension set right. So pull gear back against spring, thread bolt in several turns, release tension against bolt/spring. Install cams, bolt down bearing blocks, remove service bolt. Same procedure for both sides of engine.

Ya I think it’s all starting to click for me now. I just removed the driver exhaust cam. Vised it down. Turned the gear, threaded in the bolt, put back into the head, bolted the cam down and removed the bolt. Dots are lined up too. So I believe the driver side is all ready to go. Now just the passenger.

Right on! Just confirmed is FSM, passenger side (they call it RH side) you align the double dots on reassembly.

    Another thought:
From what I’m gathering, driver side cams only have 1 dot per wheel that need to line up (2 total). Passenger side cams have 2 dots per wheel that need to line up (4 total). Maybe this is suppose to distinguish between driver and passenger cams?

In your picture (with the mirror), are you one dot matching one dot? Or one dot matching 2 dots? Should be 1:1 or 2:2

Driver is 1:1. Passenger is 2:2. I believe this is right but correct me if I’m wrong. Only thing that makes sense to me right now.

yep that’s right. Both cams have both sets of marks (I believe both sides are interchangeable) but the 1:1 or 2:2 difference is the FSM trying to help you out by putting the cams in the right location where you can bolt the caps down easy (ie you don’t want to compress your valves with the bolts/caps) by placing cams in a “neutral” position. Once you have everything bolted down, spin your cam 180 degrees, and the other set of dots should match (as the dots are 180 deg apart). At the end of the day, you always want the dots to match, and the dowel on the end of the camshaft aligns your pulley to the camshaft. This pulley will make sure you are at the right spot before you put the timing belt on, not any of the dots on the gears

Ok well I have all 4 cams in and tightened down and their dots all line up at the moment, so I don’t have to do anymore turning cams right? I can move on to halfmoons?

Is this referred to as the intake manifold or the air intake chamber? I have a torque spec pdf chart and one is 22ft lbs and another says 15ft lbs.

Finally got the cams correct so now I can move on to the more simple reassembly. Thanks to everyone who chipped in with advice.

She’s starting to look pretty good now
