I have REC 90 fuel available which is 90 octane pure gasoline, it's always fresh because there are so many boats, snowmobiles and ORV's running around my neck of the woods. It's only a buck a gallon more than 87 octane ethanol fuel so I will try it this summer and see if the Taco likes it better.

I use Shell, 87 and 89. Tell the difference, not much. This now in 2023 OR TRD-V6 and 2022 4Runner 4.0.

Shell advertises their gas, best in the west. OK, one of the posts on this forum, asked, do you know what is being filled in the tanks at the station we fill up at ? Good question. How many tankers do we see filling the gas tanks at high noon, where we buy beer and crap ? Usually on third shift.
Is it Shell gas ? Formulated with the latest and greatest additives ? Is it the same gas that is at the local joint run by these guys from the Middle East countrys ? I have seen the tankers at the Shell station I fill up at, locally, none of them have the Shell emblem on them.
I believe if you follow them, they will go from the Shell station to Joes Hot Dog and Gas station. :)

If you are driving with a V8, 11:1 Compression Ratio, or a Vette, 91-93 octane will be in your tank.

I bought my truck in November with a full tank. Seems to run good normal to me But I was planning on using the same fuel I put in my old hotrods 92 octane ethanol free Mostly because I don't drive much and ethanol free doesn't turn to crap as fast Probably February before I get down there. I am curious if it will get better MPG will keep in touch on that

I've been running shell E10 87 grade fuel. Seems no difference with that or 89. I notice a difference after awhile running the 92 octane with 10% ethanol. My sr5 v6 doesn't like it. Less power, the transmission hunts going up small grades, plus i get worse fuel economy. Even my exhaust tail pipe tip turns sooty black.

so are you saying I could be running 85 instead of 87 at altitude where I live, 5700 feet and higher? And switch to 87 when driving into the lowlands?

No. I bought it new In January of last year. No mods. Could just be the learning curve of the transmission. It took about 3 tank fulls. I try to use BP consistantly. Someone else mentioned transmission shifs possibly related to gas. Who knows?

I've noticed the quality of gas sucks in the midwest. That might have something to do with 89 octane, or better guys claim to run in these trucks. Our fuel in southern new england is very fresh. Even the 87 octane when stored will last a couple years, and still be ok. 89 and up is even better for longer storage before it goes tapioca. My brother runs 92 in his 400 trans am or he claims anything less pings bad. I can't run it in my tacoma.

You do realize pre-ignition can still occur in modern fuel injected engines, contrary to your claim, right? The two links give evidence to that. Google engine pre-ignition and detonation and you will see that modern engines with turbos were a particular area of concern.
ECUs can’t compensate for some conditions such as degraded spark plugs, excessive carbon build up on pistons, and possibly even bad fuel.

Ethanol generates less power than gasoline, so you have to burn more of it to get the same results.

    from wiki:

Ethanol contains less energy per gallon than gasoline, to varying degrees, depending on the volume percentage of ethanol in the blend. Denatured ethanol (98% ethanol) contains about 30% less energy than gasoline per gallon.

I run nothing but pure gasoline in my small engines. Mowers, chain saws, motorcycles etc. and all gasoline related problems went away. Everything runs good even after sitting for a few months. Let things sit with ethanol fuel and come springtime nothing will start, sta bil 360 helps but doesn't solve the ethanol problem.

My thought is why not run it in my Tacoma too. Pure 90 octane gasoline ought to get the best mileage the truck is capable of getting.

EDIT: Here is a list of gas stations that have non ethanol fuel.............https://www.pure-gas.org/

    :notsure:

Ok I got to put my 2 cents in here!
I haul fuel to gas stations! So I have to go to the fuel racks in town to load up my truck and deliver to the gas stations we all go to, to fill up are
    cars and trucks!
Regular (the lowest octane fuel–generally 87)Midgrade (the middle range octane fuel–generally 89–90)Premium (the highest octane fuel–generally 91–94)
There IS A DIFFERANCE! More so on the BRAND of gas!! like Shell or union 76 and Arco/BP! Arco/Bp is the worst!!
More so now as ALL brands are starting to put liquid Butane into the fuel. Then you have HLVP and LLVP
LRVP is a winter mix all the added crap they can add to fuel is added!
HRVP Summer mix = cleaner AIR, burns cleaner and BETTER FUEL Mileage!!!!!
now between the Octane's nothing from 87 to 89 a big difference between 87 and 94 if you can find 94 octane
even bigger difference in leaded gasoline but we can't run leaded gas it fucks everything in the engine and CATS up!!
    Octane boosters? not worth it!!
Gasoline is all about the ADDITIVES they add to the gas now Chevron in Oregon is the best then Shell you will get the least amount of additives added and if you can stock up on summer HRVP gas
The thing about HRVP and LRVP gas is it cost the same to make both LRVP makes the fuel companies more $$$ because of the added chemicals that can be burned in gasoline companies pay to get them disposed of burn through your cars engine!

Ethanol is nothing more then a Farmer subsidize Market!!
Vegetable alcohol !!! Entire states of corn fields are subsidize for corn alcohol and fodder for animals
So why is Ethanol not good for car engines??? it is WATER BASED!!

I get better mileage with non ethanol gas here VA. Granted it’s 93 octane and our truck doesn’t need it but there is more energy in pure gas than with ethanol added. I’d be happy to find an 87 or 91 with no ethanol. I do a ton of driving. Bought my Tacoma October 11 and I already have 12735 on the odometer.

When I drive, I notice a lot of newer vehicles ping/engine knock under acceleration or going up hills. Especially Kia/Hyundai and Toyota sedans.

My truck gets best MPGS, and drives the best on chevron 94E0. I get advertised MPGs and I’m far from
Stock. I’m running premium SFOB 2.0

On stock tune I always used shell 91E0 and my truck drove great, no hesitations/vibrations/low torque or whatever else folks complain about on here.

I really do believe these engines run better on 91e0+
