My truck has high mileage for a 2009 (52,000), I only had the truck a couple weeks when I brought it in and had the issue documented so I was still under my 3month, 3000 mile Certified Used warranty. I did end up buying the extended warranty due to this problem incase anything else goes wrong. Maybe someone with more knowledge of the warranties could comment, but since it ended up being the transmission would this be covered by the 7yr/100,000 mile power train?

Here's a link to the Tundra thread that I took with me to the dealership:
There are the notes from my service history online (I don't have the repair order infront of me):

You must be Andy's buddy, When he told me the issues you were having I searched up and down the web to figure out what it was. Would of never guessed tranny. Glad you got it fixed!

    Richard4878 - Yeah, I'm Andy's buddy! That's funny, tell him I said Hi.

hamNswiss on rye - No problem. I took it back pretty quick because I had just bought it so it never got worse. It felt exactly like hitting a rumble strip on the highway, I actually thought it as a problem with my passenger side front wheel (from where you sit in the driver's seat the tranny would be in that direction), I was surprised it was the tranny. Under the right conditions it would only last a few seconds and then go away, this is my first truck so I'm getting used to the differences between this and my Accord, but this just didn't feel right. It didn't shake the whole truck but you could deffinately feel it. I thought my repair order said specifically what part was malfunctioning, I'll check tonight and update you.

Hope that helps and good luck.

At least two people in the thread mention their problem was fixed by a new transmission or torque converter or both.

I really do not want to pay for a transmission. I only have 90k on my 06. I did call and make a appointment with toyota so hopefully they can find out and fix whatever it is. I'm hoping there is a software update.... Very unlikely I know

I've been having problems with my '06 doing the same thing, sometimes like hitting rumble strips and if locking out of 5th it drives OK and above 40 I can shift into 5th and it doesn't do it.

I did the rather expensive ATF change myself, $134. (13qts X $9qt) dealer wanted $235.

I get no codes and have noticed that no one has mentioned seeing a code either. My local dealer told me they didn't even have a tranny mech. They just want to throw a new tranny into it for $4200! For owners out of warranty, I have gotten a quote of $1900 from a highly regarded shop that goes through the whole unit, rebuilt TC and all.

Of course, the official Toyota replacement tranny is factory rebuilt and has a nice warranty. Everybody will give you a warranty, but getting them to honor it is another thing. Frankly, I've not made up my mind on which way to go on this issue.

Here is more reading for ya !

TORQUE CONVERTER CHATTER OR SHUDDER .
A very common problem with the A750 . A combination of mechanical spool valves and electrical solenoids are used to acheive lock up . Valve body wear is very common and all we as users can do about it is keep our oil super clean
For you guys with high mileage ......Read this http://www.sonnax.com/parts/1774
The SLU solenoid controls your torque converter lock up and is known to cause issues if flushing your oil doesnt help . If you suspect a converter issue , replace the SLU solenoid and change " all" the transmission fluid .The SLU solenoid can also be adjusted . Turning the screw in will increase pressure and possibly fix a shudder . Do not turn it in more than 1 turn .
Tap the brake pedal when you feel the truck vibrate . Tapping the brake will manipulate the brake switch and turn the converter lock up clutch off .keep your right foot on the gas and gently use your left foot to tap the brake . If the vibration goes away for a couple seconds , the lock up clutch or an engine missfire is your issue . This can " usually " be fixed by simply flushing your trans fluid . There is also a flash available from Toyota http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tec...ssion-fix.html and fluid additives from Lubeguard http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/M465HA.html to stop the shudder but you will need to figure out if you have an engine issue or torque converter issue.
Lubeguard is well know in the transmission industry and works amazing for fixing converter shudders . You can see the product lower down in the threads .I would not post about Lubeguard if it didnt work . This post is designed to save you money , not waste it replacing your torque converter . Find some Lubeguard and "USE IT"
In the illustration below , its going to show you how to pick out a missfire .That vibration you are trying to pinpoint at a certain speed can be dublicated in your driveway if the issue is engine related .. To diagnose this , use the chart below

The way the guy at Toyota explained it a switch inside the transmission was sticking and they had to replace it. It is covered by the powertrain warranty (which I think it 7yrs/100,000 miles), but looks like you're just outside of that on the age. You could try going in there and complaining about Toyota reputation and how the truck only has 90,000 miles, especially if you can prove you adhered to maintenance. I had a problem with an Accord in the past and tried that, honda ended up covering most of the pricey repair (I still had to cover some but it was a good discount).
